Had my dealer remove the rear end break-in oil as part of the service required spelled out in the maintenance manual. Worked great for a few weeks then as I would make sharp turns at low speeds, I could hear a real bad noise from the back of the car. Took the tech for a ride, he confirmed what I had been hearing. A service note requires that a series of figure eights be performed after the fluid is changed. I guess the tech did not do that. Anyway, Monday AM the SS goes to the dealer for posi work.

I remember having to do the same thing(driving in figure 8's) when I did some work on my 75 Vet. At that time GM used a "fish oil additive" in all posi units to keep the clutches from chattering. When you drain the grease it also drains from between the plates hence the noise and chattering. You have to drive in the figure 8's to make the clutches and plates slip and get the grease back in there. I don't think you can get the older additive any more but I think the newer ones are just as good and even better.:)

Yeah you are supposed to use a friction modifier..(I prefer ford or dana modifier) or I use four bottles and recommend the vehicle to do some figure eights to work in the modifier..Plus with the eaton lsd we have you do not wanna use synthetics in there...

The SS has a limited slip, not a locker as with the I6? Many of the GL5 gear oils come with the friction modifier for ltd slip difs already included.

Yes, The SS has the Eaton limited slip, not the locker. This Diff. is much stronger.

Huh? Service spelled out in the "maintenance manual"? I dunno. The owner's manual says this on page 5-50:
------------------------------
Rear Axle
When to Check Lubricant
It is not necessary to regularly check rear axle fluid
unless you suspect there is a leak or you hear an
unusual noise. A fluid loss could indicate a problem.
Have it inspected and repaired.
-------------------------------
I couldn't see anywhere in the scheduled maintenance sections any reference to when this should be done, only reference at all was that regular TrailBlazers get only 75W-90 Synthetic Lubricant, but on the TBSS rear axle you need that PLUS "With a complete drain and refill add 4 ounces (118 ml) of Limited-Slip Axle Lubricant Additive (GM Part No. U.S. 1052358, in Canada 992694) where required."
You sure they didn't hose you with unnecessary maintenance, and then hose you double by doing the unnecessary maintenance WRONG?

I should go check my Owners Manual....Dont understand why GM says to use synthetic lube and every Eaton or Auburn I sell or install says not to on the Blue card they come with...I guess it is just a way for them to sneak out of warrantys......lol
