I went to retorque my lugs today (as recommended) today, but when i put the socket on, half of the locking lug nut came with it...Has this happened to anyone before? How will I get the rims off for winter? And its not just one nut, its both rear nuts! What can i do? Everything I do to the truck happens with a struggle...Lowering led to camber and front boot problems, rims lead to nut problems and centering ring problems? Anoyone?
Did the lug bolt snap or did the locking nut itself break? (I usually end up breaking a lug bolt trying to take them off, not putting them on). From your description, sounds like the locking nut itself broke...maybe too short for the length of the stud?
Anyway, they sell kits to remove broken locks and locks for which the key has been lost. Most dealers and good mechanics would have them, you basically hammer a shell over the remnants of the lock and then use an impact wrench to spin it off. I've seen a socket used as well, you get a socket that almost fits over the lock and pound it on with a hammer and then spin it off. (Usually ruins the socket btw, although craftsman carry a lifetime warranty). Hope this helps.

I've done that a few times when I used real cheap locks that striped when I had my 84 regal. I had olds 442 rims on the regal. LOL

Its like the actually piece broke, like the part with the special tool mark...The threads are still on the lug stud, but it like sheared off..most of the one side is gone, and on the other theres still a pointy part, my dad just left with the truck but when he gets home ill take a picture of bth pieces...and im also just waiting for my friend to call back from the place that installed the rims yesterday...im think that since they were so fussy and looked like they didnt give a crap they maybe overtightened them and didnt say anything.

Bet it wasn't deep enough to accept the entire length of the stud and broke off when tighted....although better material would have held up better. If you look at the center, there appears to be a light indent or mark from what is presumable the top of the stud....unless its a reflection.
Just curious, brand locking lug was this? (Looks like a cheap cast material in the picture).

Not the companies fault (McGard btw) good people, but we figured the local shop sold me some that were long enough for the rear. i guess the studs in the back are longer, and theses bottomed out, and snapped. im in conta ct with the company now, they seem like theyre willing to send me another set.. Good company to deal with. Are they a good name brand? or are they known for having this problem?

Problem Solved.
Being the smart 17 year old that I am, I took the broken piece and put it in the lug tool...Then i put it on the broken part still on the truck and turned it until it fit...Attached the rachet, and pushed while loosening, took my time...and the rest of the lug came off...now i just have to buy the proper set and i'm done.
