Interesting...

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--Billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian's Tracinda Corp. sent a letter to General Motors Corp.'s (GM) chairman Friday, saying the company should set up a panel to explore joining the partnership-alliance between Renault SA (13190.FR) and Nissan Motor Co. (NSANY).

i hope they don't. adding two more uninspired car companies to an already unispired one wouldn't be a good idea. now if they could somehow hook-up with bmw...:)

There are several rumors around the automotive industry right now suggesting this merger as a good possibility.

I heard this today on the radio as well...would definately ensure that GM remains the #1 automaker

Depends on who's buying whom. Remember, DaimlerChrysler was billed as a "merger of equals"

Actually the CEO that is running both of those companies, Chosn, (Sp?) turned both of those companies around. Renault might be a joke over here but they thrive outside the US.

Anyway, the guy runs both companies and flies around 50k miles a month (in his own jet of course). Both companies are making profits which is a far cry from what GM is doing.

This guy would turn GM around.

renaults operating income has been all over the place (and unit sales haven't grown that much) while nissan has provided more stability and growth. the only way this guy can turn gm around is a clean sweep of all upper management and some through the ranks. it would be interesting to see what happens but in the end if its cost cuting without exciting high quality products there won't be much of a turnaround.

I think GM doesn't need Nissan and it's parent company Renault. They are doing good by their self (GM) and with their new and future products they won't need them two. I know and think it would turn A LOT of buyers that normally buy GM's if a foreign company bought GM. I think Nissan would use GM if this deal goes threw. And if the new GM products would have to use Nissan 4 cylinder engines that would turn a lot of buyers off.

This doesn't make a lot of sense to me after GM already had partnerships with Subaru and Suzuki and has basically backed out of both of those. And GM has it's hands full with Opel/Vauxhall and Saab and GM just paid a ton of cash to get out of its Fiat relationship so parternering with Renault just seems to make no sense at this time.

It's been rumored that Renault/Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has been courted by Ford pretty heavily so it'll be interesting to see where he ends up.

And make all the fun of Renault that you want, but they are the first team to whip Ferrari in F1 in many, many years.

Nissan makes very good cars and are much more "inspired" that the current GM lineup in my mind. I think it would be a good move for GM.

Just think about the next Impala SS, a badge engineered Maxima!

Actually, I like some of the newer Nissan designs......the Murano for one isn't half bad for a cross-over, or better yet the FX35/45 from the Infiniti division. Could possible fill a few holes in the design area for GM. Give Pontiac the Murano for a Vibe replacement for one.

I dunno about that Impala SS gimmick, but a Murano re-styled a little as a Vibe would definately help. Haha, going from one Japanese manuf. for the Vib e to another!!!

GM is dying so I wouldn't say they are doing good. They bring products to market 5 years after the demand passes.

A lot of Americans buy Chryslers now after Mercedes bought them.

GM products already use a lot of import parts. Honda engine is one example, Toyota engines are another.

If you look at the main reason GM, Chrysler, and Ford are lagging their japanese rivals, it comes down to their contracts with the UAW. They're paying millions if not billions in retirement and layoff settlements. The Big 3 are spending a lot of money on union contracts that most of their competetors don't have to deal with. For the CEO of Renault to try and fix GM, not going to happen on the American front because even in France they don't have to deal with a UAW sucking the auto industry dry. I'm not trying to offend any UAW members out there or get off topic, but this merger isn't going to fix GM for the long haul.

Id bet kerkorian thinks GM is moving too slow and wants to scare them to get them moving on the turnaround faster, maybe he is afraid of losing more money. More likely, he figures the merger mania will up the GM stock price, when it gets high enough he dumps his shares, makes some money and who cares what happens to GM, merger or not....

GM doesnt need Renault or Nissan. They already have a global presence in Europe and Asia and they dont need to be bigger
