View Full Version : Airbox Cover ?
Just checked my air filter and is it my imagination that there is a bypass in the top of the airbox that allows unfiltered air to the induction system? I could not believe that such a system could get past a chief engineer much less make it into production. But I guess much worse things have happened.

I was curious too about this possible bypass in the air box. I think the only ones that could tell us for sure what it is, are the engineers.

I recently installed a K&N drop in filter on my 04 the other day and was curious by the design of the cover over the filter. It seems like it's designed to act like a silencer that takes extra air from going into the engine? There is the plastic air intake that is pretty much useless. Why didn't GM have that coming from the wheel well like other trucks It seems to make more sense? I noticed a bypass hole located on top that fits into that silencer cover. What would happen if you blocked it from keeping air going back into it?
Has anyone just installed the drop in K&N and left the entire cover off to see what kind of performance they received? I didn't want to try something like that yet til I heard some opinions.

GM has been known to put shotty induction on their stock vehicles. The intake on my Camaro(s) was flat out horrible, pretty much begging for a cold air kit.
I suggest you just upgrade to kit and be done with it. I didn't notice much at first with my Volant but I'm assuming the ECU just needed to "learn" that the thing was there and now I notice a nice "punch" in certain RPM ranges. Oh, that and it looks great.
