Does any one use the above item on a Porter Cable 7336 SP or equivalent and can you tell me the product number nad tell me if it is a 5" or 6" plate.
I was reading that a 5" backing plate is better to use than a 6". A safety factor not to hit the painted surface with the plate. Let me know what size you use as well.
Thanks

As I've now said many times in your other thread, you DEFINITELY want a 5" plate for 6.5" pads. My plate P/N is 05775. :m2:

I have a 6 inch backing plate. I got all of my pads from Griots Garage. I use.... orange for polish.... red for wax... and the white microfiber bonnet to take it all off.

I picked up the 6" 3M hook and loop backing plate part number 051131-05776 and the Meguiars 6.5" pad part number W8006 from a paint and auto body supplier. My PC indicates on the counter weight to use only a 6" plate and as indicated by the sales person he had recomeded I buy the 6" to match the counter weight.

I use my 5" backing plate with a 6" counterweight; if anything you should be more worried about matching the pad size to the counterweight than the backing plate. Even then it really is a non-issue as far as the difference is concerned for operation -- it just depends on what you think feels better. I bet that backing plate is larger than the velcro on a W-8006, isn't it? That's VERY dangerous. You actually should have a bit of the velcro showing around the edge of the plate, ideally. Otherwise its way too easy to chew up a pad and scrape the backing plate along your paint. :m2:

Unfortunately the 5" backing plate is considered a special order item here and the 6" backing plate was $51.75 and is not a special order item. Meaning that the 5" would be around $75.00 if ordered. So in this post I wanted to know if anyone had used the 6" backing plate, because I am not willing to spend $75.00 on a 5" backing plate. I know I can ebay it (5"), but I wanted to use my PC this week end and I wanted to see what the down falls, if any, would be.

Honestly, I wouldnt go getting in a hurry to use it; like I said with that 6" plate you are running a huge risk of destroying the pad, and potentially scraping up your paint if the edges come in contact anywhere. Especially if you run the machine much past 2-3. If I were you, especially this being your first time using such a machine, I would want a proper setup before just rushing in to do the job. I understand that you don't want to spend even more money, but as I've always said, it's better to do it right the first time and buy the proper setup, than to fix mistakes later.
BTW I've been getting the feeling that maybe you dont like my input in terms of detailing/machine polishers... why is that? (if it is the case)

Hmmm. The polisher I bought was the one you had recommended in my post about polishers and I believe it will be a good recommendation (Thank you).
I have posted the question in regards to a 6" backing plate as explained in my previous post (Canadian availability and cost). I have no problem in spending money on things that are what I consider worth it, but $75.00 for a backing plate. However, reading your explanation makes sense so I have returned the backing plate and pad today and bought the Pad and the 5" backing plate for $43.00 Canadian off of eBay.
The pad I returned today was $35.00 Canadian so the total bill for the two items was over $85.00. The ebay price is half the cost of what I had originally paid, but delays me from using my PC this coming week end.
BTW I PM'd you
