I think my Trailblazer doesn't have an auto locking dif. I think that because I remember it almost got stuck once when I was 4 wheeling and the left rear tire was not on the ground.

My question is, does anyone know if it would cost a lot to switch to an auto locking dif. I'm guessing I would have to replace the gears.

I'm going to check with my dealer tomorrow just to get an idea on what it would cost.

Look inside your glove box. There is a label on the glove box. If one of the codes is G80 you have a locking diff. If no code, no lockee.

Envoy Fan is right - G80 designates locking differential. the "G" codes also signify gear ratios (GU6 = 3.42, GT4 = 3.73 & GT5 = 4.10). If you want to convert a "non-locker" to a "locker", the minimum required would be a locking differential assembly, set of side bearings, lubricants & cover gasket. Specific needs would be determined when disassembled. The I-6 uses an 8.0" ring gear & the V-8 uses an 8.6 " ring gear. The factory uses a combination limited slip clutch set-up and a fly-weighted governer set-up. Could be somewhat costly if purchased as new OEM. If you decide to move forward on this you may want to consider the aftermarket for limited slip differential assemblies. I used an aftermaket differential on an high horsepower muscle car which proved itself to be bulletproof. Good Luck

Thanks for the info. I don't have G80 just as I suspected. If it costs too much, I'll live without it. The 4WD can get me through 99% of the terrain. I found out I do have 3.42 gears though, which seems right because I get around 19mpg with the V-8 at 75mph.

The Chevy dealer couldn't help me so I went to a 4 x 4 parts place. They said it will be around $450 for parts and another $300 to install. I might look into it again later.

My '02 has GT5 and G80 both on the sheet. Meaning (which I believe) I have 4.10's and a Locker :D

I get ~14 MPG city, 16 MPG highway during the winter. But it always increases 1-2 MPG in the summer so I'll be seeing 16-18
