View Full Version : Rotors

I noticed that the TBSS and the C6 corvette both use 12.8 inch rotors, but are they the actual same rotors? Once my rotors are worn, I want to replace them with something much lighter and less likely to warp as fast.
Also, what is better, slotted or drilled? I thought drilled would reduce weight and heat, but I see alot of guys using slotted on performance cars.

Warping rotors is a myth.

Slotted tends to be better than drilled, as drilled are apt to crack under very hard repeated use.

When I say warped, I meant the actual grooves created and the uneven wear. This is what causes a decrease in performance, pulsing brakes and shaking.
I want a rotor and pads that can take my abuse. Any suggestions without stepping up to a larger caliper? I know ADM has a set up, but I can't afford that at the moment and feel that a lighter, performance rotor and the right pads would be sufficient.

You want the best performance? Go with a rotor that is neither slotted nor drilled. Seriously. Drilled, if the holes are not cast in, will crack with heavy usage. Slotted helps alleviate the "outgassing" of the pad...'cept modern brake pads no longer suffer from "outgassing" of days past. So, if you want looks, I prefer the slotted-only look.
Lighter & less prone to warpage is somewhat difficult to attain as well. You need mass in the rotor to absorb and distribute the heat generated from braking. Too little mass and you'll overheat the rotor. Only ones I have seen do this effectively are the two-piece rotors from DBA & similar.

i would be happy with brake pads with less dust

"Hawk" brake pads are known to be "less dusty" but not sure you will like the performance.

Just remember that the TBSS uses 6 lug studs and Vette uses 5 lug studs. No help here.

Just about to mention that, good point. They cant swap back and forth.

Don't believe every thing you read. I took this same white paper as gospel to. I now know better.

Have you ever seen a warped rotor on a correctly installed vehicle (hub and flange flat, and lugs tightened with torque wrench)?

So, are these the same rotors they use on the SSR?

No, I think the SSR and the Vette share the same rotors and lug pattern. I am almost positive the SSR has 5 lugs, and if they do have 6, it isnt the same bolt pattern as the TB.

According to this Ebay ad, the SSR is a 6x5 bolt pattern.

OK, you are right. I have never actually seen an SSR wheel until that ad.
I wonder if their bolt pattern is exactly the same as the TB platform is. 6x5 is the same, but there could be a few mm difference...:undecided

Does anyone make slotted or drilled rotors for our SS's?

NOt that I can find. No one seems to list anything for them. I called the dealer and it shares no part number with any other application, so must be a brand new part.

Noble...as far as warping goes...my 99 SS Camaro had a very bad pulsation while applying the brakes. The rotors had no grooves and were quite smooth. When they removed them from the vehicle it was obvious that they were no longer true. Once the rotors were turned and the high spots knocked off the sides the vehicle stopped properly. I would take that to mean that they were warped. I also had the problem on a 98 S-10 Blazer. Similar conditions and repair.

The vast majority of the time, that's from uneven brake pad material deposits:

It can normally be fixed by a series of very hard high speed stops. Having your rotors turned is another way to fix them.
