View Full Version : Rear end Fluid from Dif ?

I was under my envoy today and notice alot of fluid leaking onto the pig itself, I do tow things just not ever day. I enclosed 4place sled trailer in the winter, and 24 ski boat. not ever day. maybe I'm looking a front seal? I wish I had pics while I was under there.

Any one else seen this ?

No noises or anything wrong just fluid covering pig.

Does it smell like gear oil? What's a pig? If it's the front or rear diff, I'd check oil level ASAP as they burn up quick on low oil. Bad input seals or axle seal leaks are not unheard of. Rear diff cover would be a common leak point on the rear. Check the vents tubes for plugging as well. If the diffs cant breathe, they will blow out the seals.

Is it leaking from the pinion seal where the U-joint is or the rear cover? Both are easy to fix.

Its leaking at the front where the u joint meets the rear part of the drive shaft. if that helps... the level seams good maybe a tad low but ont enough to add or make a huge difference.

Is it a leak or a seep? A leak will usually result in a drip from the source to the ground or a very wet area. A seep looks more like a stain. It is not unusual for a pinion seal to seep. If you are not losing any rear end lube to speak of I would not worry about it. But keep an eye on it to see if it gets worse. I would eyeball it once a week.

Mine seeped enough to have oil on the stabilizer bar below. Replaced the OEM gear oil in it with Royal Purple 75W-90 and no more seep. It's dry now.

I think im going to do that this weekend lol, this is going to be the weekend for changing oil, in the voy, boat, crotch rocket, and workin on my sled too...the royal purple i heard was a great oil. i think the only place that i can get it pep boys at a decent price. :yes:

thankz again, i see your using the 75w-90 sence i do tow something pretty much in every season should i go to the next thicker gear oil? :undecided

75W-90 is what the factory spec calls for. I wouldn't change from that viscosity. Good Luck with it!

Again, check the diff vent lines. Especially if the truck was ever in the mud/water. 9 out of 10 times, any diff oil seapage or leaks is caused by a plugged vent.
