It's funny that something like that can fail an emissions...yet their are still thousands of cars out there on the road with way worse problems.

At least a gas cap replacement is a cheap fix. Could be a lot worse.

Same scenario with my '98 Eldorado...vehicle passes state emissions test (OBD II), but fuel cap fails test. I left the fuel cap loose one time before, creating a fuel tank pressure loss and all holy hell broke loose (bells ringing, "SES" light on and dash readout, stating "CHECK FUEL CAP".) The vehicle OBD II system knew I did something wrong and called me on it immediately. Converesly, with a same-scenario fuel tank pressure loss, the state must have some magical tester or someone who doesn't know how to read data stream, to tell me I have a defective cap. They would not pass my vehicle, told me to buy a new cap & bring the receipt. Had to return to the testing lanes to have the new cap retested. I have seen some of the "debris" that graces our roads. Yes I know, to some, it's the best they can do, but when a vehicle becomes a danger to innocent others, namely mechanical deficiencies, the vehicle needs to be "parked". If I was driving down the expressway with my family in my vehicle and I had a choice to drive next to either a polluting vehicle or a mechanically deficient vehicle, I'd pick the polluting vehicle every time.
