Tried to change oil filter for first time and failed. Very tight in there even with skid plate removed. Can anyone recommend socket type oil filter wrench? There is no clearance on the sides for a band type oil filter wrench. Has 5.3L V8 Engine.

Oh man that sucks. Been there! Did you try a smaller band type wrench? I've never had a socket type work on a tight filter. They just spin & round out the flats on the end of the filter. Good thing is- once you get that filter off, every one after that will be a pc of cake if you dont hulk them on too tight. If you can only get to the bottom of the filter, you can crush a BIG pair of vice-grips over the end and twist her off that way.

I have a socket type oil filter wrench that I use on the TV. Bought it many years ago, they probably don't make quality tools like it anymore. It has opposing sides that initially clamp together, then rotate when the rachet is turned. It will remove any filter. Find a Snap-On supplier, or maybe Sears. Good luck, those factory boys drink a six-pack for lunch then torque the crap out of oil filters. No wonder GM et al are going down the tubes.

I use a small band wrench with no problems on my V8 Rainier, but I'm using the slightly longer Mobil 1 M-206 filter.

Oh yeah! that 3 jaw deal will do the trick. Never saw the type bearcat has, but that sounds sweet too.

We use the straight jaw oil filter pliers for the SS it's the same .

i use the type that has several pivot points. and so it fits many sizes, but it has little teeth, the harder it is, the harder you turn, the harder the teeth bite down.

Thanks for taking the time to post pics bearcat. That's a heck of a filter undo'er!

It has never failed me. It will apply enough pressure to crush the filter can but it always gets it turning. Not enough room in the Trailvoy's for the old screwdriver through the can trick. No idea who the manufacturer is, I've probably had it for twenty years.

The oil filter wrench with the cam lock (Cal-Van Tools) is a perfect choice for the I-6 filter application. I would also suggest the 3/8" drive wobble extension. It gives just the angle you need to avoid interference.

for really stuck filters, I just pound a screw driver through middle of the filter and turn the screw driver (you're just throwing the filter away anyways) its a little messy, but you only have to do it once.

Easier said than done my man! You'd have to pull the 4.2L out of the truck to do the screwdriver maneuver.

Ah i remember my first oil change .. that factory filter was hell to get off... i switched to a k&n filter so i could use a socket on it ... might want to go that route ... :undecided
