I do not have the rear view mirror in my Envoy with the compass and the Onstar. I do not care much for the OnStar feature much ( as useful as it is) but if I purchase a mirror with the compass can it be hook-up in my car to where it will work. I miss my compass in my old car... :( Do you think the hook-up will be expensive? Complicated? Worth it? It just passed my mind when I was riding in my friends SLT :undecided Just a thought.

With the mirror, connector, and wiring diagram this should be easy. I installed an auto dimming/compass mirror in my '93 Blazer and it was very easy. There were just 3 wires to hook up: switched 12V+, ground, and a "reverse sensing" wire that gets 12V+ when you're in reverse. The idea is to brighten the mirror if you're backing out of a garage, but most ppl don't bother to connect this. I didn't and never felt the need to.
If you get a mirror from an Envoy there will be a bunch of extra wires for OnStar, but you can simplify things by finding a dimming/compass mirror without OnStar or just trim them off. The mirrors are all over the place: junkyards, eBay, etc. You can probably get a used one for under $40.

I found a mirror for 25 buck on eBay, Here is the link..I guess check it out and tell me if it is worth the buy. eBay Mirror (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2002-GMC-Envoy-rear-view-mirror-with-onstar_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33699QQitemZ7992 075949QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW)

I had a similiar problem. My '05 Envoy Denali was equipped (as all '05's) without the auto dimming feature. I bought a mirror from the same seller as you have found on Ebay from an '04 GMC Envoy SLT. Now I have auto dimming, all OnStar features and the compass. It was a plug an play mod.

So was it worth it? I just have the basic mirror you can get. I have nothing right on my mirror at the moment. Remember, I am starting from scratch here

Thats a bunch of crap...I thought GM just did this on "cheaper" models. Cheapskates...

The price is very good now but the final selling price will probably be higher. Auctions have a way of doing that. Anyway, if you can get the connector (or if your existing connector looks like it will plug in to the eBay mirror) it will be an even better buy. I don't know if the stock mirror even has map lights; if not than your mirror may not have a connector at all. You will need the connector for this to work right.
Also, the listing on eBay says the mirror is not auto dimming but it sure looks like it is. It also appears to have a larger digital readout area, so I assume this mirror can display compass AND temp. I'm pretty sure mirrors like this were avail. on Envoy SLEs with manual HVAC controls. For the temp to work you will need a sensor but these can be picked up at a junkyard or new through a dealer. I think they run about $10-15 new. It will also involve some extra wiring.
Keep in mind you can get a mirror from a different vehicle too--the button mount on the windshield is pretty much universal for domestics. You do have to be careful to get a mirror that's wide and tall enough to cover the full back window though.

What about the "Passenger Airbag On/Off" display on the 05 (and possibly earier) TB/Envoys? Is the mirror simply a display or does it affect whether the system works or not? I know in the past GM has integrated other critical things into non-critical components of the vehicle.

I was personally glad to get rid of the "passenger Airbag On/Off" "feature" on my '05 mirror. It was a distraction every time I looked up. The sensor as I understand it is in the passenger seat. It takes so much weight on the seat to activate the passenger air bag.
The '06's have the auto dimming mirror again. Guess GM got tired of hearing from the GMT360/370 folks about the removal in '05. I know I let them have an earfull more than once about the lack of the auto dimming mirror.

I did the same thing as envoy fan and replaced my non-dimming mirror for a dimming one.
I will wait for 06 to see if the driver side mirror is plug and play.
BTW that guy on ebay always lists that stuff wrong. Such as auto-dim.
