View Full Version : dip stick question
i have a 2005 envoy denali and i changed my oil for the first time the other day. the book says 6 quarts of oil per change. it also states that the oil should read between or even with the top of the cross hatched area on the dip stick. i change the oil and filter added six quarts and mine reads above the cross hatched area by at least a 1/4 inch. is anyone else having this same reading or is my dipstick wrong. thanks.

Is this before or after driving it? And if it was driven, did you let the engine sit off for about 10 minutes before checking it?

Did you fill the filter before installing it? I always do, but if you didn't, start it, let it sit a few minutes and check it again, it will probably be right on. The paper element in the filter will absorb at least that much.
filled it, drove it, check it latter in the day.

sometimes if you flip the dipstick over before putting it back into the engine to check the level the reading will change. 6 quarts is what you should be putting into the V8. if it reads a little above or below the full mark, you are OK. It is just a dipstick, its not rocket science.

Too much oil can cause foaming, and starve the engine of oil. I'd rather be slightly below the "full" mark and in the safe zone then above it.
IMO, always trust the dipstick, and never dump exactly how much the manual says. No matter how hard you try, you will never be able to get every last drop of oil out of the engine. Fill the filter up, dump about 4 quarts in, then on that last quart add a bit - check the dipstick - add a bit - check the dipstick, etc.. until its full.
EDIT: Wow disregard this post! I was poking around the archives and forgot all about how old this thread was!
