View Full Version : Quick help with tire size and rub!

I am looking to order 20's and also looking to find out what is the biggest tire size I can fit without getting a rub. The stock overall diameter of the 235/75/16 is about 29.9. I am looking at 3 options:

265/50 = 30.5" diameter

285/50 = 31.3" diameter

275/55 = 31.9" diameter

My goal is to try and fill up as much as the wheel well as possible and not get a rub. I am new to the TB scene and really don't want to rely on a tire place with no experience for their "expert advice", so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

The max size is going to be based upon the back-spacing of the rims you buy. I have 275/45-20s on my American Racing Torq ST Chromes and they're REAL close to the upper ball joint. I believe Envoy Fan has 265/50-20s and doesn't have any rubbing, but I don't think you'll get either of the other two to fit without lots of back spacing or a spacer. (Not to keen on the spacer idea myself, but they work).

Just keep in mind that the larger the tire, the farther off your speedo is going to be and the slower the truck will be. (Larger tire diameter = lower final gear ratio).

Thanks for the heads up with the back spacing. I never even thought of that. I am well aware of the speedo corrections. I have been driving trucks with 40" + tires my whole life so I know that story. I am not to worried about the speedo being off with only going up a few tire sizes. I would like to fill up the wheel wells as much as I can. With the 275/45 how does your rig look? I defintely won't run a spacer. I don't want to drive a roller skate. Thanks for the help!!

As ylab said, I have 265/50-20 with American Racing Piranha's and also the Ground Force lowering springs. No rub.

These tires/wheels also available for sale. See the forsale posts if you know of anyone that might have interest.

I have the same tire size as well. However, I do get a rub. Only happens when I slow down at a decent rate of speed and turn left? Strange, kinda like me! :duh:

Seems like the 275/45 is the safest way to go. Any recomendations on lowering kits. I am use to going up, this is the first time going down! Thanks

If you look on tire rack - all the 20x8.5 wheels they sell, they pair with 275/45-20 tires.

That being said, I have 20x8.5 wheels on their way (not from tire rack) and 275/45-20 tires sitting in my garage waiting to be mounted - SO I am hoping I won't have a problem with them.

I really like the way my truck looks with the old Mag style chrome wheels and the lower profile tires. They're actually nearly the same diameter as stock, but with more rim and less tire so it gives the illusion of filling out the wheel wells better. There's an angled shot in my gallery, stupid me I didn't take a side shot of the truck! (Well, something to do over the weekend after giving her a bath & quick detail).

Good Luck
