I would like to know when would be the best time to rotate the tires on my 04 GMC ENVOY SLT 4WD. I have 7150 miles on it. I still have a 20% engine oil life, so I still haven't done the first maintenance, but the manual states to rotate tires between 5000-8000k miles. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I would change the oil and filter NOW and have the tires rotated. The oil is overdue and the rotation is about due.

cbwilsha,
The enigne oil life is still ok! I don't know if you have heard this but the "3000 miles bring it in to jiffy lube" crap is just pure money making!!! Same thing goes for any dealership who tells you the same. Our envoys are equipped with an oil that should last at least 10000miles depending on your driving habits. Although, the oil should be changed at least once every year!!! I bought mine brand new in Feb of 05, so I am only about six month with it!

I agree unless your oil changes are 10,000mi apart, like mine are b/c I run full synthetic. I havent rotated them in a long time, I suppose the dealership did it before my warrenty ran out 18,000mi ago. Hehe, I probably should have rotated them, but I have been putting off new tires for about the same amount of time... (No wear bars yet!) Hopefully will get new rubber this week.

First off, Welcome to the site!!!
pfitto, you are correct in the gm oil life monitor, but way off on your oil changes. the oil life monitor is ok, but you should probably not go over 5,000mi (maybe 7500) on dino oil. If that is the factory dino oil I would be very scared of problems arising because you are supposed to change the factory oil over at 500mi for a new engine. There is a lot of metal that goes into the oil over the first 500mi, so it should be changed ASAP. I agree, the 3,000mi JiffyLube thing is crap, but 10,000mi is a little long for my comfort. No, our TB/Voy are not equipped with any fancy 10,000mi oil, anyone who told you that is very wrong. Sorry to rant, but I think cbwilsha is right on this. BTW, I think in your owners manual it tells you to look into changing the oil when the oil life indicator goes to around 20%.
I'm not looking to anger you, but I think you might want to look into having your oil changed to make sure nothing happens later on in the life of your Voy. After this, change the oil however often or not as you like, but as a fellow car fanatic, I am advising you to change the oil.

If I'm reading this correctly, you haven't had your first oil change yet. If you haven't, I strongly, and I mean strongly consider getting your oil changed as soon as possible  . I feel that the first oil change is critical as it helps remove any shavings or manufacturing byproducts that could ultimately cause premature wear for the engine. My :m2: . My engine oil life ("lie") monitor didn't kick in until I was well over 9,000 miles and most of the miles were in the city for me. At that time I've already done at least two oil changes. I wouldn't trust the oil monitor.
If you're lazy, like me, I bought lifetime alignment/tire rotation/balance for about $120 at my local mechanic shop. I can do it as many times I want. My tires still look brand new.

Also, if you walk into your local Les Schwab, and ask them nicely to look at your TB/Voy, they will rotate your tires for free. Had a problem with my RX300, it was pulling right, and they rotated the tires, and I have been fine since!!

I rotate my tires on every other oil change. I use the 3,000 mark as a reminder to buy oil and a filter...then find time to have it changed. You also can't always go by the oil life for an exact percentage. If for example the dealer only put 4 quarts in and reset it to 100%...you're not actually at 100%.

Well all I can say is that this is not a sports car, but an SUV!!! If any of you have read the manual, which apparently some haven't, the following is what it states. I do want to emphasize that this only applies to all 04 GMC Envoys not Chevy Trailblazers since it comes from my manual. Things might be different between them, eventhough they both come from GM (just like Cadillac VS Chevy)
"Your vehicle has a computer system that lets you know when to change the engine oil and filter. This is based on engine revolutions and engine temperature, and not on MILEAGE. Based on driving conditions, the mileage at which an oil change will be indicated can vary considerably. For the oil life system to work properly, you must reset the system every time the oil is changed.
When the system has calculated that oil life has been diminished, it will indicate that an oil change is necessary. A CHANGE ENGINE OIL light will come on. Change your oil as soon as possible within the next two times you stop for fuel. It is possible that, if you are driving under the best conditions, the oil life system may not indicate that an oil change is necessary for over a year. However, your engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and at this time the system must be reset......"
Additionally you guys should do a search in MotorTrend's website for GMC Envoy and read the long-term test updates.
But anyways my question was on tire rotation!!

I dont want to bring back the topic cuz i see you like to go back to ur orginal thread. I also have a Envoy Slt with all the toys u could have. My dealer did tell me about the computer system that tells you when you need to change the oil, he said when it reaches 30% then get it changed. but he also mentiond not to go by that every time, You need to check it onces by opening the hood. What if the oil is leaking? what if the envoy is burning oil like how it was with my past envoy. We're just telling you not to go by that computer system, its not accurate.
back to the tire rotation, umm i forogot what was the question so i'll go back and try to post a reply. :)
lol

As a technician and Envoy owner, I still suggest changing the oil every 3k miles and rotating the tires every 6k miles. Just because you think you can wait that long to change your oil, you shouldn't. Acids and sludge will still build up in the oil and crankcase, especially if you do a lot of city driving. Is it really that big a deal to spend $30 on an oil change? Not only will you extend the life of your engine, but it will give your vehicle the opportunity to be looked over by a technician for any problems that you may be completely unaware of. From what I have seen working on the line, when the vehicles get up into the higher mileage range, my customers that have been in my stall every 3k miles have vehicles that are in much better condition mechanically, and overall, than the vehicles that waited longer. Case in point, if you wait 7500 miles to get your oil changed, you might not have seen the battery leaking acid out of the positive post for the last 4500 miles! But that is just my professional opinion, it's your truck.

Yea, sorry, just saw ur post. I have the light assemblies now, and ordered the gm harnesses yesterday and had them overnighted. Now, the place I bought them probably had to special order them from GM, so I wont see them until Friday, at the very earliest. I am out of town this week, so I cant install anyway, but will try next week(end). I am going to create a how-to, for everyone that wants to add them.
