So thinking about TC's.
In searching it almost seems like most are saying that the I6 is not worth the cost of labor?? Slight improvment...
I called the local trans shop today and he said $450 to $500 labor to install a TC. That sounds like a bargain and for the money not something I want to mess with.
Let me start off by saying this is a daily driver, this is Iowa, we drive in the snow ! I plan to putting about 75,000 miles on this truck.
So, I am pretty sure I dont want too much stall. Yank has 3 models on the lower end. 2600, 3000 and 3200. I think stall for stall the Yank is probably better effeciency and performance wise than the GM.
Is there any reason I would not want to do this?

Yeah, if you don't want your truck to launch like an animal and you don't like going fast:D jk... only hesitance on my part was that tranny warranty is now gone (unless you are VERY friendly with your dealer:yes: ) Along with the tune, best mod going for these trucks...highly recommended!

Well for 450 bucks, I would pay the tranny shop to put the stock one back in before I took it to the dealer. Consider it a $450 deductable. Most you ever pay for a tranny repair :) Course ya got to get the yank back in.

AWD seems to have more problems then the 2wd guys. If you can deal with driving a big stall I say go with a custom made PT3800 and it'll launch HARD, plus pull hard from a roll compared to the ss series.

Well Skinnies, you do realize I cannot take YOU to seriously? I have seen you drive ! Have vids to prove it.
3800 are you nuts !
haha.
Yank came back recommending The PTB 3200. Heck I dont even know if I want 3200.
Here's some food for thought on the lost warranty by installing an aftermarket converter. Last I checked, several of the larger transmission chains honor warranty repairs for GM vehicles and GM warranties will pay and allow repair by those shops. (Aamco comes to mind as one of them, unless this has changed recently). If the shop doing the work is among those approved by GM and you're on good terms with them, I'm betting they'd be willing to work with you if the tranny fails and they did the install work.
Anybody know for sure if this is still the case with transmission repair under warranty or whether they've changed it?

I recommend finding a local guy to let you drive his car with a stall if you have never been in a stalled car before. I'm sure you'll be plenty happy with the PTB 3200, I'm just VERY picky on stalls.(ran 4 different ones in less than 5000 miles on my camaro trying to get the perfect stall, which I finally did) :)

The weight of these trucks have an affect on how big of a converter you want to go with.

If I were you, the max I'd say to go for is a 3200. This is what I plan on going with. Also, the PT series of Yanks have a much larger disc and they should be more durable. They also keep the stock tow rating intact.

With the maggie, you may also want to check out the Yank SC3000.

Yea, I do need to look into that. When I was speaking with Dave@Yank I wasn't planning on going supercharged...

FYI - i do not know what your guys towing capacity is with the SS but a 3000 stall will not work on a truck pulling 3000 to 4000 lbs very often.

I will never forget how my old drag car pulled with a 4500 stall. It was a full frame, smallblock, VW bug. 2280 lbs. with me in it. 96 " wheelbase. Pump gas 350/350 w 4.11s minispool. Handmade adj.4-link. Hell we had to make nearly everything on that car. 11.66@115 The motor only pulled to 6000 with a hyd. cam. But you damn sure had to heat the tires and line it up properly or it would give you a ride/sideways. woohoo! I miss that car.

So what would you guys recommend for someone that tows and wants a TC? (A very heavy tandem axle trailer with 2 four wheelers is what I tow most of the time.)
How much are the 60 foot times and quarter mile times improving by with a decent stall?:undecided

I would ask Yank and tell them what you tow. I think the one I bought WILL do the job, but they have better for towing applications I am sure.
And your 60' and 1/4 mile time question. This is one I was thinking about asking.
So If you did your TC seperately, tell us what stall you have. What previious mods you had and your before and after times.

IMHO You would want to keep the stall rpm down a bit for towing. With a 4.10 gear you could pull it into 3rd and stay above 3000 rpm most of the time. I would ALWAYS tow in 3rd. And run an oversize trans. cooler. A trans. temp gauge would be an excellent option. As long as you keep the temp. reasonable you should be O.K. Dave

So, the next question in preparation of the Yank arrival.
I dont trust the tranny shop enough to dump decent fluid back in it.
I am thinking about taking in ATF. Did GM use anything special on these TBSS trannies like a Mobil Synthetic?
And secondly, Since the tranny is somewhat removed at this point, would I be stupid not to have them do a little more? Like from what I have heard Billet Servos are easy to do when the tranny is lowered. The cost of the servo's are pretty cheap. And it its pretty easy to swap them, I am guessing the tranny shop wont charge much?
I am not building a race tranny but would like to add some longevity to it for a little "hard driving".
Vector is sending me their 550 HP tune (just kidding) So about all I am running is e-fans, UD, Tune, CAI, HSRK and the 3200 Yank.
Comments?

The transmission fluid is a new Dexron VI standard which you cannot even buy at the store yet. When I did my TC install, it wasn't even available at the dealer yet (hopefully is by now). I just went with Royal Purple Synth ATF, but from what I have read, the Dexron VI is a significant improvment over Dexron III but what this means in the real world of tranny's???? I would say if you can get Dexron VI from the stealer than go for it, otherwise my Royal Purple has been fine.
As for the billet servos I would say put them in now. I have ordered mine (highly recommended from my tranny expert) and obviously it will save you some time & trouble to do it all at once:)
