View Full Version : SHEDDING SOME LIGHT ON THE SUBJECT

I drive some dark, two-lane secondary roads where illumination is paramount. I upgraded the headlamp bulbs in my '02 Suburban w/PIAA Extreme White 9005 & 9006 bulbs. This was done back in 2002 where circa 2002 bulb technology existed. It is now 2005 and I'd like to perform the same type of bulb upgrade to my 2004 T/B. I want something that projects a white, intense light...something I can "warm the pavement" with. Not interested being chic'...nothing with color, no light bars, etc. Like to know what's currently being used out there...Also is there something out there meaningful that can be installed in place of the fog lamp bulbs...either brighter bulbs or a lamp replacement...the front tires don't need fog lamp illumination to show them the way. I want to put as much light as I can as far down the road as I can.

Slyvania (sp) makes the silverstar. This is supposed to be the whitest light next to HID, not as expensive either. I've priced them at the local pep boys and checker for around $25 per light. I'm planning on putting them in my Envoy as soon as I save about $100.

I've got the low and high beams replaced with silverstars in my '02 Envoy; did it about a month ago. It gives me GREAT illumination down the road, I'm very happy with them. Each bulb is $19.99 though so it's not exactly cheap. I'm hoping I can switch the foglamp bulbs out with some silverstars, but I don't want to hop under the truck until spring to see what it will take.
Anyone know if the foglamp assemblies are sealed or if the bulbs are swapable?

The fog lamp bulbs on my '04 T/B are replaceable. The bulb trade # is 880. I would suspect it's the same on earlier year models. Sylvania lists a Silverstar bulb (P.N. 880 ST);shown as a replacement fog lamp bulb.

You should be able to pick up Silverstars at your local Wal-Mart for about $35 a pair.
They are the best bang for the buck bulbs.
If you want the best and brightest quality bulbs, PIAA are still the way to go, but they are expensive. (although not near as pricey as the real HID's though).
PIAA have great fog light bulbs too, but I have not checked specifically for the Trailblazer size. I have them in my Corvette and always get flashed the highbeams at me, because they light up the road so well.

My local WalMart only has GE bulbs. Pep Boys sometimes has them on sale in their monthly flyers.

I'm told they are swapable and done from behind by pulling the bulb out. I have bought some silverstar replacements, but weather has slowed me down from putting them in.

Yeah really. I'm not climbing under the truck on a creeper when it's 20 degrees out! Otherwise I'd just crawl under and look for myself. It's one of my first priorities for spring though since it's a cheap mod.

Actually I just changed out the fogs on my '05 TB last night with some silverstar's. Although it's not 20 degrees outside, it still only took me 10 minutes to take the old ones out and put the new one's in. It's a simple twist, pull, replace, push and twist thing. The 05's are 880's as well and I got mine for $25.

Or do like I did and get a HID mod kit. Costs about 250-300 with everything and plugs into the stock harness. Total install time? Under 30 minutes and worth EVERY stinking penny

Are your fender wells sealed? I am looking at having to cut a hole in the one side of my fender well to get to one bulb. The pass. side already has/had a hole when I bought the truck, not the drivers' side though. I'm hopefully going to pull the wheels in the next couple days or so to finish that task.

Huh!? Cut!? There is no way you should have to cut a hole to access anything. I don't think!? I just reach up and turn the bulb out.

As promised, here's the pics:

You can see how it isn't easy to get to the fog bulbs without cutting the hole to reach in and grab it. Whoever had it before I did put the hole there, so now I'll have to make it match, or at least try.
