Has anybody had any issues w/ their brakes squeeking?

Lately, my brakes have been squeeking wether i press the brake hard or soft...... seems to happen once i've been driving for a lil while(i would say after about 10 miles or so).

i took it in to the dealer to have them check the brakes and they said that everything was ok...no problems. that was the 1st time i took it in.

the 2nd time i took it in b/c the same SH*T was happening and the squeeking is pretty damn annoying....this time they said that they had to clean the brakes off b/c there was a lil rust and that everything else (including pads and rotors) was just fine. they assured me that the squeeking should be gone now......

not even 5 miles from the dealer did the same SH*T again start happening!!!!!

so i called them again and all they could tell me is to bring it in and they'll look at it. so i agreed...i said ok, i'll leave it with you ALL DAY AGAIN and so i did. this was the 3rd time in 3 weeks (last 3 saturdays).

so i leave the car w/ them....and a couple of hours later i get a phone call from the service department saying that the rotors need to be refaced. of course this isn't covered under warranty and they charge $100 for that. i asked them about the pads....and was told that the pads are just fine. only the rotors need work. So....b/c i want this damn problem fixed i agreed for them to do the work and again i was assured this is the problem.

so now, 3 full days (9-4pm for the past 3 saturdays) and $100 later.....the DAMN problem is still there. LOUD *** SQUEEKING!!!! So, i called them and i spoke w/ a manager this time and told him the situation......again i was told...."bring it in".

Is it just my luck to have a SH*TTY Service department...or is there somthing w/ the brakes on these cars? Are the stock pads that bad? i have no idea...i've checked it out myself, and the pads are still almost new. so...im lost!!!

any help or advise would be great....

thanks for letting me vent....i hate dealer service centers.

Sometimes brakes just squeak. And I know you are pretty annoyed at this point. They make a product called stop squeak that is supposed to be applied to the back of the pads during installation. What it does is it lubricates the piston. Then noise you are probably hearing is the piston moving in and out when you brake. You have three options...
1. Deal with the squeaking.
2. Have the dealer apply the stop squeak to the pads and hopefully that will work.
3. Remove the pads and replace and use the stop squeak.

Sometimes the pads are the reason and a higher quality pad would help.

My suggestion is to have the dealer put the stop squeak on the pads you have on the vehicle and see if that works.

No problem with brakes here. What year is your Envoy and how many miles. I have heard of GM replacing rotors under warranty because of warping. The pads on '03 and newer have a pretty good reputation for performance.

When my bike Disk brakes start to squeek, i soak the pads in isyprol alcohol for 24 hours them bake them at 350* for 4 hours. I don't know if you wanna do the same, but if you replace them, experiment w. the old ones :D

Do you have a recipe for baked caliper :p

I bought some kellogs brake pads (it said that it's part of a healthy car). The recipe was on the side :rotfl: :rotfl: :D

No seriously, the guy at the bike shop told me to do that.

wow! baking brake pads? that's a new one for me!

As far as the squeaking goes, some squeak at times is normal. However, the problem you are describing is probably that there is a hard spot in the pad material. That is a normal condition that can occur in any brake pads. Or you may be experiencing a condition called glazing. That brake pads and rotor surface get too hot from extreme braking and will actually glaze over, like glass. Whether it is glazing or a hard spot, you can try removing the brake pads and scuffing them with a 200-400 grit sandpaper (pretty rough grit). Be sure to bevel the edges of the brake pads, too. This will help cut down on future noise. You should also scuff the rotor contact surface, that way when you go for a drive, you can completely reseat the bake pads and hopefully have no more noise.

If you had come into my dealership, that's how I would have approached your concern. As far as the quality of brake pads from the factory, they have come a long, long, long way from previous years!

And I have said in other posts, I ask that people do not generalize about dealer service departments. MY customers are very happy dealing with the dealership service department. Your experience at the dealer is only as good as your service advisor and technician working on your vehicle. If you are not getting the service you desire, ask for a different writer or technician. :m2:

Autotech is right on the money!!

When we make calipers the design guys factor in a lining wear angle of about 2*-3*. This changes some of the 1st order natural frequencies so that two parts don't have the same natural frequency and that causes the noise. Plus is casues the caliper to deflect and form around the linings and reduces the vibration coming from them.

Anyway, Do what Autotech says. IT should help.

i actually took it to the dealer again yesterday, and the tech there told me about the "glazing condition" and did mention that it is caused by over heating. This is the first tech there that actually seemed to know what he was doing and talking about...... he applied some stop squeak and i think he also sanded the pads down a lil and it seemed to have helped quite a bit....but not 100%. Definatley a big improvement than before.

i do plan on buying different pads today...and replacing them all together.

ANY SUGGESTIONS ON PADS?????

oh yeah....AUTOTECH: i didnt mean to bash all dealer service centers at all....JUST THE ONE IM DEALING WITH......

thanks for the input and help guys!!!!!!!
