View Full Version : Trans Servo Install with SW Headers :(

Just wanted to let everyone know my expereince today (or lack of for this matter) regarding our brief attempt at the Sonnax servo upgrades to the TBSS today. I do have the SW off road headers and in a nutshell, unless you either remove the passenger side header or drop the tranny, forget about it. The servo cover is right behind the collector and you only have a few inches clearance (not nearly enough to remove and/or replace the pin). Unless someone else here has some better method, basically I am waiting to do a full rebuild if I have to go through this hassle. So until someone comes out with a "bullet proof" 4l70 rebuild package (willing to sell parts only), these servos will stay on the shelf in the garage.

A few weeks out on that one Ben ;)

Pull the rear drive shaft, cross member, trans mount , [ while supporting the trans of corse ] lower the trans should give you 3 inches downward travel and allow you to install it . With the sonnax you should have a new pin I would say you should have to pull the header to check clearance . If you used the Vette 2-4 then you can reuse the stock pin and not have to clearance it . Just push on it you should only have 1/16th-1/8 of an inch . Hope this helps .

how much are they charging you to do the build on it???? and what do you mean by bulletproof?? how much power can it hold?? do you know what they are doing?? sorry to drill you with questions but alot of us want to know!! and brady sorry to hear on your day i would be pissed if I spent all that time for nothing!! Whats up with the alt pulley tool? did you use it yet?

please get a detailed explanation on what they upgrade for you, would help many of us out if it works out....Good Luck...
Brady, just be sure to read up on guys installing the servos incorrectly, make sure you have the proper clearance, and double even triple check it, seems this is one mod if done 99% proper it aint good enough... Like Matt said, that's the best way to do an"in car" install, we've done a couple at his shop and it really is the only way to do it, trying to get up there without dropping it a few inches is a recipe for disaster...

This in itself is about enough reason to make me go with the Vette over the Sonnax and skip the 4th gear servo.

ltz03 .... haven't changed my alt. pulley yet ... vector has the tool now.
Tony, I agree in order for it to be clearanced properly with a dial indicator, tranny has to be dropped if going with the Sonnax servos. Going to wait for a full bench rebuild once a upgrade "kit" is available that will let this thing handle 600hp or so.

4L80 would be the way to go. I can't imagine that we would have the clearance problems of the f-bodies (but who knows). The controller compatability would be the issue.

4L80 is still a tight fit, natively no T42 runs a 4L80 right now but it could be patched pretty easily. For as crazy as most of these guys will get a built 4L70 should be just fine; I dont think we have any hardcore race trucks here hehe (yet!)

Wait, so you could theoretically stuff a 4L80E into a TB??? Very cool!!!:D
I know there would be sftw issues, but just the fact it would actually fit is pretty cool. AWD/4WD guys would have to do a bunch of work from what I hear the Fullsize guys have to do b/c the 4L80E is a couple inches longer (shorter drive shaft, longer front driveshaft, revised transfer case mounting pts, etc).
But, I really bet once the 4L70E gets some bulletproofing (like a FLT Stage 5, etc) then it will be able to handle a lot of hp/tq!
