OK, as most of you know, I replace the filter and cleaned the pan back in July. I was planning on doing a system flush, but didnt have the time. I was wondering if when I am installing the aftermarket tranny cooler if I can flush the ATF through the already disconnected lines. I need to know if there is suction from the return line so the new fluid can be sucked into the system from a container.
(Basically, what I want to do is before I connect the return line, put the factory line into a empty collection container and put the other side of the line (the one that leads back to the transmission) in a jug of ATF. Then, run the engine and transmission to purge the old fluid and suck the new ATF through the system. I just want to make sure that my tranny will suck the fluid out of the jug so I dont burn up my tranny :x or have to pour it in through the dipstick.

Any comments are appreciated! :D
Thanks!

In theory this will work but it's not recommended for a few reasons. It could turn out there's too little suction from the return line (not likely though), you could mix up the lines and pump old fluid into the new fluid container while the return line sucks air, sucking the new fluid up from the container could lower the pressure to the point it caused problems, bubbles in the system, etc. The flushing machines at a shop run under considerable pressure to avoid these problems.

I have read of this being done successfully on other vehicles, but personally I'd be too nervous to try it. It's one of those "try at your own risk" procedures.

On the 4L60E, just pump out 3-4 quarts at a time, then refill. It takes about 15 quarts to completely flush the tranny and torque convertor. Here's a link (http://www.gmdiy.info/portal/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=17&Itemid=26) that might be helpful. It's probably safer doing it this way than risking pulling in air should a hose come loose on the "suction" side.

Thanks, I was contemplating only pulling a few quarts out at a time and then refilling, so thats probably what I will do.

I used a clear plastic jug and pumped out between 1-2 quarts a time. Then measured it with another clear jug (new fluid) and replaced exactly what I took out until I used 12 quarts.
I disconnected both lines at the radiator. The one on the passenger side will discharge the fluid.

I have a great suggestion, why risk wrecking your tranny. Take it to a dealer, were they can flush and replace anything that is needed. It may cost more, but then atleast you know it is done right.. just my :m2:

Good point Russ, but I want AMSOIL ATF in there, and the dealer will only use the GM fluid. I was looking at a T-Tech, and for some reason they wanted to charge me about $175 USD for it. I got all 14 quarts of Amsoil for about $105. Better fluid, better price, better for my TB and my wallet!! :D

Even use my AMSOIL? If so, that would be perfect, as I have already changed out the filter and 5qts. I will call the place close to me on Monday and see if they can do it.

Yeah, if you use a transmition shop, you should beable to use whatever ATF you want. They are not obligated to put in GM ATF.

FYI to anyone thinking of this; my dealer here in colorado has synthetic fluids for trans, transfer case, and engine (mobile 1). I am going to all synthetics as soon as I get 3000 mi on my TB.

Actually, I have about 29000 miles on my TB, should I be changing my Tranny fluid soon?? I believe it is still original Fluid, so that means that it's 3 years old.. Hmmmm

Whatever anyone says, dont let them put anything but AutoTrak II fluid in your transfer case. This is the only fluid on the market that will work with the transfer case we have. I know its the dealer, just make sure they are using AutoTrak II. But, the plus to them doing it is if they F it up, you will get it fixed for free. :D
