Did you ever notice that nothing ever goes smoothly when I try doing something  Here's the story!!

I bought a power steering pump off ebay. It was used w. 1600 miles on it from an 06 Voy XL. I checked the tracking number on friday and saw this...

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c313/rawad_db20/HPIM2551Large.jpg

I never got a card, so i waited for today's mail, because they usually mail it later, and nothing. So i called Canada Post and the guy gave me a card number. He said, just take this to the guy and he should give you the package. So i set off at 2:35pm to the post office, which was about 8 miles away. Yes i biked there and the temperature outside was about 25*f. After a painstaking 50 minute bike along the highway, I reached the mall, locked my bike and went inside to look for the place. When i reached there, there was a HUGE lineup, with about 15 peope ahead of me, so I stand in line, card number in hand and wait...20 minutes later and I explain to the guy how I never got a card and he's like that's ok, i just need the number, so I give it to him and he types it in in like 2 seconds or less  It shows nothing, and he shows me the screen... :undecided I didn't bike 8 miles for nothing!! So i stand in line again and after about 3-4 people it's my turn again, so i ask him to type it again, and as he types it in and turns the screen to show me, it pop's up!! He's like what the?!?! I'm sorry, just a minute, let me go find it for you :D He gives me the package and i pay the $11.33 customs on it and get a Jr' Chicked from McD's. hey, i didn't have anything all day but breakfast at 7:30am. I decide to take a different way home, and i'm glad I did because it was all downhill, about 30 minutes of cruising with my hands in my pockets, I reach my area and bike over the hill and reached home at about 4:50pm. I MADE IT!!! Now all I have to do is install it :x

I've got a qustion! There are 2 hoses connected to the bottom if this tihng. one has a spring hose clamp and one is a screw type of connection. Do i have to disconnect these hoses first? I don't want PSP fluid running down the engine block  Any ideas on how I can empty the fluid before I ake it off? Also, how much fluid do I need to put in? Should i buy a couple bottles?

I would get something to suck the fluid out of the resoivoir so you dont have to deal with fluid coming out of the resoiuvior (I did and it was a pain). Once it is drained, disconnect the hoses and then catch any leftover fluid with a small container. Then, if you havent pulled the belt off do it and then unbolt the old pump, remove it, and install the new one. Since you got a complete unit, you dont have to transfer the resoivoir like I did, so then just fill it up (only uses a small bottle of PS fluid) but take it to the dealer/auto place where they can flush the old fluid out. It cost me $80 to do, but I changed the fluid at the same time (never been done before).

I was reading how some peopel did it themselves by filling it up, and enptying it out after they run the engine for a bit. I wanna try flucking it myself. I made my dad pay for the customs and told him that's what he has to pay for labor :p he didn't like the idea haha

i changed power steering fluid from regular to partial synthetic.
went to store and bought a big turkey baster. I removed as much as I could. Then I refilled with the new fluid. Since there still fluid in the hoses and stuff, I drove it for a week to circulate the new fluid...., then I went ahead and sucked out this mixture again with the baster- and refilled with new synthetic fluid.

On of the hoses is the out, the other the return. Not sure which side would work the best, but I am betting its the one that the fluid goes out through on its way to the rack. I would get a section of hose from the auto parts store, really cheap. Attach it to the pump. Run it to a bucket, start the truck, run it til no more fluid pumps out. Thats just my shade tree method. Good luck!

I like the turkey baster idea! I was gonna try what ghoster said, but i'll see what happens...

The threded line is a pressure line from the pump and will spray fluid all over the place if you remve it,,, the line with the spring clamp (rubber hose) is the return line from the rack, you need to use the return line to flush the fluid as you add more to the res and it cirulates the baddies out. heres a description of what you need to do to flush the rack.

get a gallon of dex3 fluid and about 3foot of 1/4" fuel line, about 5 foot of 3/8" fuel line and a pack of those universal fit vacume line splicer replacement fittings, suck out the fluid from your res. using the baster until the res is empty. then remove the spring clamp from the bottom of the res (return line) and connect it to the 3/8" line and run it out the bottom of the truck avoiding the dangerous stuff (belts pulleys fan blah blah) get a 5 gallon bucket or equiv. now plug the return port on the res. with a cap from that universal vacume line repair kit.
prepare the 1 gallon of fluid by sticking the 1/4" line into the bottle and again use the baster to start a syphon, once the fluid is running solid from the bottle pinch off the 1/4" line with a pair of needlenose vice grips. your ready to flush the system. add fluid to the res again until its almost topped off, have a helper (or your remote start) start the truck and DO NOT TURN THE WHEEL yet. as fluid drops in the res it will suck the fluid into the pump, flush the old nasty out and run into the bucket from the 3/8" line. continue this until the fluid is clean and red shut the truck off.
now your ready to flush the rack.
**** return lines gain alot of pressure if you dead lock the steering wheel to the righ or left dont ever dead lock the wheel while you have this 3/8" line connected to the return line comming from the rack it could blow off and leak fluid all over***
again have a helper start the truck and SLOOOOOOwly turn the wheel to the left and right as you fill the res and check the return line for debris and fluid running redonce you feel the fluid is clean and the rack is flushed clean go ahead and stop adding fluid to the res.
once the fluid starts spiting into the bucket shut the truck off.
remove and reinstall the "new" pump and fill the res up with fluid (your choice dex3 or the far more expensive "powersteering fluid") start the truck and just let the pump do its job keep filling the res until the res. dosent take fluid, now its safe to cycle the rack and pinion back and forth filling the res every so often to keep fluid on that "new" pump about half way through the filling proccess i would add a pint of Lucas powersteering fluid then fill the rest with what you were using.
*** again dont dead lock the steering as the air thats in the system will superheat and could also blow out some seals in the rack***
it will sound terrible but that will happen so dont worry about it
after you have filled the rack to the proper level (cold) go ahead and dead lock the rack breifly in both directions this will remove the air that may be trapped in the system and your DONE !!!

dont pass over this step to flush the rack and pinion, if you do you run the risk of shelling your new pump from the debris in the system.

just for fun take a papertowel and dip it all the way down to the bottom of that fluid you flushed it with and remove it, look at it and see if there is alot of metal in it.

Here's another idea to remove the fluid. Remove one of the lines from the power steering cooler. Add a section of hose and direct it to your oil drain pan. Run the engine until the fluid stops sputtering out. Never tried it on the TB, but I've used this method several times to flush the ps pump on my wife's Exploder. If you want to flush the system, refill the pump, and repeat. Several times should remove most of the old fluid.

Well, it doesn't whine anymore!!! Damn i only have 4 words to say...EASIER SAID THAN DONE! It took me forever to figure out how to unbolt the hose. I ended up taking out the washer fluid tank, which had a sensor on the side which was loose and it popped out, spilling about 1/2 of the washer fluid :( Putting everything back, it took about 10 minutes. The reservoir itself took about 1 quart. I don't think i can fluch it anymore without removing the whole tank again, which i DON'T wanna do.

I have a question though. That plug thing looked like a water level sensor. any thoughts? :undecided
