So, here is a question....
After realizing I did not get much in the way of "customer service" at the dealership where i bought my SS, is there anything in the VIN or anywhere on the body [i.e., stickers, etc] that would indicate what type of drivetrain i have RWD, AWD? I know that it is NOT 4WD, because the know on the dash is an SS placeholder.
I hope i have stated this so as NOT to confuse or misrepresent what info i seek.

Do you have a button near your shifter that would be used to active/deactive your all-wheel drive system?

when you punch it, do your back tires break loose? like can you do a burnout?

why not just look under your truck
You can tell by the vin #, look at the 5th digit. If its a 'S' you're RWD and if its a 'T' you should be AWD. You can also look into the front wheel wells to see if there's a half-shaft going to each front wheel......no half-shaft is RWD, with half-shafts would be AWD.

Look under the front of your vehcle. If you have shafts going to the hubs then it is a AWD TB...

You bought a SS and don't know if its AWD or RWD?!?!?:x
Look at the paper work the dealer gave you, it should tell on that

this is my very FIRST SUV. I bought WAAAAAYYYY up on the food chain of autos. My last car was a Cavalier Z24. So, if i offend anyone with the questions i write here....then that is CLEARLY YOUR issue.
Since, i teach for a living, i am all about education. there is no "stupid question." Just stupid people who do NOT like to provide info when it is sought.
THanks to all of you who have helped me to learn more about my new vehicle. HAPPY TRAILS TO ME and to you ALL....

The paper work said it was AWD, but i thought there needed to be some special switches and what-not's. Again, thanks and i am learning.

dont worry what everyone says....we test drove an SS, which i thought by initial look-over was RWD, cause there was no switch...little did i know, it was actually an AWD, and that i wouldnt have seen a switch at all, no matter what it was....i just assumed it would either be RWD or 4WD, not full time AWD....:) ...youre new, bought an awesome truck, and youre trying to learn, and theres is no such thing as a dumb question....but you gotta admit, it is pretty funny...
It is an awesome truck either way. The easiest way to tell the difference is the front axle or lack there of if it is a RWD. I don't know if you can tell the difference with the VIN.
The vehicle is also new correct? If it is then the dealer is required to give you the sticker that should say if it is AWD or not.

Now, that made me laugh. :D Because some people out here in the forums would think one would need a PhD in off-roading or high performance loving in order to buy an SS. But, hey...if they sell them....WE WILL BUY!!!
Again, thanks for the info and I now KNOW that i have AWD like all of the documentations state. But, what did they do with all of the buttons and switches? I must really be behind the AWD curve. Or, technology has left me n the dust. :undecided

yeah, I have COMMON sense...something my job requires.... simple prodding of the "new guy" get over it... That is NOT a question any owner of ANY vehicle should ever have to ask...sorry... I for one wouldn't have had the NERVE to ask such a question on a forum for ENTHUSIASTS...
Come to think of it, why don't we have a "Beginner" section for those who don't know what the hell they bought....
If The TEACHER thing never came up I would've skipped over this shaking my head, like my wife did when she read it over my shoulder..
Given that the SS doesn't have a switch, being either RWD or full time AWD (automatically), its not a dumb question on his part to ask this question. Unfortunately its sad that some of the responses to somebody who's obviously a 'newbie' and not a gear/motor-head have been less than helpful and maybe even a little sarcastic. - Just my $.02 worth for the night.

As we have said....we all get what we can from wherever we can.
Unless we are all BORN enthusiasts, then none would grow to learn and love their endeavours. It is sooooo unfortunate that once again in this forum there is name calling and insults hurled because someone asks a question or seeks information before, during and after a purchase, etc.
I guess i should be drawn and quartered for asking what for some is so obvious. Well, unlike our illustrious president, i jumped in over my head; stopped and asked questions, before going any further. THAT MY FRIEND IS LEARNING. If i knew it all....I would be building these FINE machines, not just coveting and buying them.
And, for the record, what i have exemplified is exactly WHAT should happen in learning....if you don't know ASK somebody! Yes, there will be someone to wail and gnash their teeth because the question was posed, but i bet information will come regardless; as it has in this forum.
So, will your attacks prevent me from asking other questions? Au contraire, i just know that there OBVIOUSLY will be those who seek to denigrate and insult rather than assist and uplift.
Now, is this the American way? OOOOOOPS! another STUPID question?

its full time...meaning all 4 wheels are always pushing you...therefore, unlike 4WD trucks, you can never have just RWD...so no burnouts:worried:

Ok here is easiest way (for people too lazy to bend over like me :) ):
1. Open Hood
2. Locate the airbox (behind the passenger side headlight, a big black box)
3. Note if the box has a sticker saying it cant be tested on a 2WD dynamometer :)
If it has that yellow sticker its AWD otherwise it's 2WD, let us know :)

Not everyone is into CARS/TRUCKS/SUV's I am sure no one knew the answer before being "taught" what was Front wheel drive/Rear wheel drive/All wheel drive. Before I got to drive my first car my dad's rules were I needed to know how to Check and identify the fluids, change a perfectly good tire, and know where to put gas. The rest I could learn "OJT". So not knowing if you have FWD/RWD/AWD is not a "Stupid question" but maybe next time look at the invoice for this information. I am sure if it is All wheel Drive is would have said AWD on the line where the Engine info. goes. But maybe you didn't now that AWD = all wheel drive.
We don't want to scare people away from this board. So let's not insult peoples questions.
Just my Opinion

you two were meant for one another...unbelievable...seriously.. does anybody pay attention anymore? let me guess you're a teacher as well, right?
it's a shame so many Americans have their heads in the clouds, or buried in the sand.. You people act like you would BUY a vehicle and not know if it was AWD 2WD FWD,etc?? this is truly laughable... maybe to me it is... "I didn't realize you were telling me to stop. I thought you were just waiving" "see this RED STOP SIGN IN MY HAND" "Yeah, I thought that was for the guy behind me" that's the way this member comes off...sorry if I CAN'T tolerate absolute ignorance, nor can many others here, most just laughed and closed the page... TEACHER.....TEACHER is the problem here... if he can't figure out what the Heck he's buying...a CAR, second largest investment most people make, then yeah, I have a problem with it if he's teaching ANYBODY ANYTHING.. it's not like he asked how to shut the traction control off (cause many DON'T read the manual & love to ask questions because they're lazy and depend on others to do things for them) Good Luck with your Trailblazer, maybe this will "TEACH" you to do a 2 minutes of research before you ask others to do it for you..

Some people don't care about the mechanics when they buy a car. Would you laugh at people that think the I6 is a V6? Not everyone knows every little single thing about their vehicle. I actually met a couple Audi owners that thought their Audi had the Quattro system. They thought Audi only builds AWD.
I'm sure he would know a few things that we don't. People can talk about computers like they know everything about them while a lot of people don't know the difference from a graphics adapter and a motherboard.
This is a car enthusiast board that is a great place to have your questions answered. If you think his question is a waste of time, then don't waste your time responding. Leave it to someone that wants to respond.

I admit, when I was looking to buy my TB in 02 I thought it had a V6 (the same one the S10 Blazers had, 4.3L V6). I looked at the Chevy website, Vehix.com, Cars.com and they all said 4.2L L6. I thought it was a typo. But, as I saw it everywhere I went, I realized it had an Inline 6 (L6) engine. I didnt even know GM made an I6 then, but it turned out it was the first year GM had made a I6 since like the 70s/early 80s. Needless to say, Im glad it has the I6, much more power than the 4.3L V6 did, and it loves to rev so getting the power is easy.
For the Audi Quattro comment Dave, I dont know why anyone would buy an Audi without getting Quattro as it is their signature and bragging rights. Now, for me it is a no-brainer, but for someone in a desert place like So Cal or Phoenix, it doesnt justify the cost especially if it is only a DD around town where it never snows or needs AWD. It pains me to see people discussing Audis without Quattro, but I ask them where they are from and then it usually makes sense.

I'm with you Tony...if a TEACHER doesn't know enough to research before you buy.....wait a sec, where is he/she? I have some beachfront property in Arizona I'll sell real cheap.
But at least we have another SS owner out there...maybe he/she can teach our kids to buy American.

I am new too and even though I am a mechanic, I will have lots of questions I am sure. (will try to search first). Looks like that one guy just woke up on the wrong side of the bed.
Besides this guy basically said he bought a AWD and was confused by no 4x4 switch. Honest question in my book.

And whats with all this "he's an idiot for not doing research, blah blah" When I bought mine, I didnt do much research.. why would I? I saw the truck, loved it, the dealer said it had an LS2, so I did verify that, then I bought it. What else do you need to know? I live in socal so I guess I may not think like the guys that live in the colder climates with regards to being AWD and what not.

this thread is pointless after the first page.... yes he asked a question that most of us find "stupid" but at least he had the guts to ask it. as far as being an "enthusiast" website, wouldnt this be the place to ask Trailblazer/envoy questions? you cant blame him for using his resources, plus he was able to figure out what he wanted.
for the guys sitting here flaming him for a simple question, you need to get over yourselves, i mean dont you have better things to do with your time than to make someone feel stupid for nothing.
