View Full Version : Side-Swiped by a Bicycle

While at a gas station Saturday night, my friend took notice of some scratches down the passenger side door. He came over to the pump where I was standing and said, "I have some bad news for ya." I said "what, the 2" scratch on the front bumper probably cause from a bike pedal?, I already know about it, no big deal." He goes "ahhh, No, let me show ya."
I rarely ever look at the passenger side of the truck, so I was expecting the worst, hit and run damage from another vehicle. It turns out I was side-swipe by a bicycle. Handle bar scratches down the entire length of my passenger door. I never noticed it the day I found the first of probably many bumper scratches. I also have Silverstone metallic paint so it hides scratches well.
They don't look too bad, but they will have to be buffed out. Looks like just the clear coat. Luckily my friends dad has been doing collision, paint, and body work for 30+ years, so I will just take it up to him. A case of beer for payment. :)
One strike for no having a garage. :)

That sucks. But a good buffing should take care of it. You have the right color for that at least. Black would be a lot harder to deal with.

That sucks. Hope all can be made better with a buffer and some beer.

yeah that doesn't sound too bad. I had a customer's car that was in a LOT worse shape that I cleaned up with just a buffer and a bottle of touchup paint:

I'd say if yours looks even a little bit less damaged than this, it can be buffed out no problem. Before anyone says, I know the touch-up isn't *perfect* but it was only in the low 40s in my shop when I did that work. She's bringing it back once the temps get into the mid 50s this spring, I'll re-do the clearcoat and wetsand it to blend in perfect.
Oh, and yes the headlight lens was gouged into the plastic. I polished that out with the buffer also.

Yeah, I'll give him the beer when he is done. Don't want a drunk guy with a high speed rotating tool on my vehicle.... :)

You don't really even need a rotary; if they're just scratches in the clear a dual action machine with the right polish should take them out.
