View Full Version : 4.2 Header- again. Who's in?
Turbo4200

If I told you that I had 30 4.2 headers (304 stainless steel) sitting in front of me; would you commit to buy? Seriously...
I recently talked to several manufacturers about the lack of an offering for the 4.2; Heddman never made thiers because the distributors never asked for any (he never even heard of Trailvoy.com). Stainless Works is interested (and also a site sponsor, as well as a maker of great products), as well as Polydyn technologies (he already makes them for Comp Eliminator guys).
So- the moral of the story- If we had a hard commitment of about 25-30 orders, this could happen (and wind up being a production piece). Who's in?
PS- I'm not out to make one dime on this; I'm building my own 321 stainless turbo manifold, so I don't benefit from this at all. My 4200 is in my 68 Firebird. I'm just trying to get the ball rolling, believing I now have the right contacts to get it done.

If the price is right. I'm in. I'd be willing to bet you'd get more response if you could name a price.
Get the manufacturer to name a price and not to start until he has a deposit each of the buyers. We've watired this long...why not a little more.

I'd sure be interested, provided the price is reasonable and it uses the stock exhaust flange setup. (I'd still want my Borla to bolt right up, along with the converter).

Ok- Define 'right price'; we are talking about a 304 stainless header. If some of you are expecting a $200 piece, then you might need to save a bit more. I'm not trying to turn anybody off from this, i'm just trying to be realistic.
Heddman said he'd do it if he had 20-25 hard commitments. SW only needed 10. I don't think it would be too hard to get that going, do you?
As for fit: it would fit with the stock converter, so your catbacks are safe.

Unfortunately, because of the past history of manufacturers claiming headers "were almost there", I can't see anybody committing to this blindly. The bottom line is that it looks like everybody needs two things here:
- a defined price
- a defined timeframe for delivery
Without these, I don't think you can get to the next stage ...

well since stainless steels a vendor maybe they can jump in and put a word in here.. I will gladly get the cash paid up front if they come and stick by what the say.. and I am serious when i say 4ppl would definatelty want headers. so that's at least 1/2 already...
We wouldn't mind spending at least $300-400 since it's one header we're installing.. plus how about a coating? It does get extremely hot here in Kuwait!!
Also any chance of getting a true dual set up for those interested in doing the custom work?? I wouldn't mind an X-pipe gurgle.. plus whats the length of the primaries? I don't think it would be worth it if they were as short as the stock manifold.. Maybe an option for those with no need for a cat (hint hint :p )

1. Price- I wouldnt spend more than $300 on a header, and Im probably not even going to get one because I cant afford $300 now but think the header should be good and not some POS just to get a header.
2. Gains/performance- Would it be worth it for the I6 with the VVT on the exhaust cam and all, would there be more than 5hp gain without a retune?

I would like a set of headers. Looking at what other companies charge for shorty headers for V8's and V6's I would expect the price to be 400-500 for 14 guage stainless steel. I feel that is reasonable. Count me in.

I'm trying to keep the price below $450 for a good stainless piece that will work with the stock exhaust, and catbacks. As for gains, that would have to be seen- as I'm not going to make any generic statements without putting it on a dyno myself. I will tell you this- the comp elimininator guys open up the exhaust on these engines, and see huge gains in flow.
So- If $450 isn't too much of a dent for a quality piece, I'm sure we could get these done. It's the Xmas break right now, but like I said- I talked to a few guys that said 20-25 orders would get a run done. My neighbor has volunteered to be the fittment & dyno guinea pig (2004 TB), so getting it made ain't the hard part.

I think a lot of us forget that the gains from headers are mainly horsepower related, not torque. I know plenty of people who experienced power gains from a new header set up and lost some seat of the pants feeling in the way of torque. 450 is a good price for headers especially cause 4200's are kind of a small market. I'd be down even if the over all gains aren't that great, besides I bet they sound like a beast with that free flowing exhaust.

If they send you a header, then it ain't a Hedman. I talked with 'the man' at Hedman at the last PRI show here in Dec; he said his distributors said there was no demand, so they never made it.
There were a few guys that had made some, but they were competition pieces for dragsters (the 4200 does very well in Comp Eliminator). I'm trying to get the header built by one of the three places I made contact with.

I am in for a header to open up this little six. I don't know about anyone else, but I feel comfortable with the Hedman name on my header. Considering they have been in the business for 50 years. Then again, the Polydyn headers made for dragsters can't be all bad.
My Main concern is CARB exemption and SMOG emissions. Will the our blazers still pass the SMOG test with the header?

I agree, but we have to actually get one on a truck first before we even worry about CARB stuff, but for the CA guys especially this could be a huge factor if a couple companies start making them and one is CARB.

the problem is there is alot of talk regarding the I6 headers, but NO ONE ever keeps to coming up with the goods. I'm based in Kuwait and made dozens of calls to companies in the states to create some headers for us, they all tell me if the demand is high..
Now logically speaking, since there is no company that offers headers for us, whoever makes the first ones will actually cash in. Hedman says there is no interest, where the heck are they doing their market research??? The average age of most ppl in Kuwait who own trailblazers are under 25, go to the scrap yards and see how many TBs per week they're pulling in, all they wanna do is race 'em.
I see this trend moving to the states as well, more and more owners are getting younger and younger! We want a header and we will pay for a header!! Ppl here spent almost $600 on a Westers tune, why, because it was the first company to put a tune out for us! Now we have tunes going for $150.
Header manufacturers, read and leeeaaarrnn!! Get one out, take the factory cat off, put yours in place. The response I get from alot of companies is that since the cat is located right after the manifold, they can't produce one. Aren't all engines blueprinted the same way??

Hi Guys
We first need a test vehicle to prototype the headers on. Basically the first customer pays for materials only, and we use their vehicle for the prototype development. We need the truck for about 3 weeks, and we are located in Cleveland, Ohio. We could do it in late January/early February-please email me at alstainlessworks@alltel.net if you are interested.
Thanks

It would have to be a Tri-Y type and bolt right in with no modifications.
Really doubt you will find any builders. I think Thorley was making his type header.
Good luck.
When you get thru blowing smoke post some details and a target price.

Not surprisingly.
"I have a dream..." that one day, the Trailvoys will see the same aftermarket prowess as civics, mustangs, camaros, full size trucks, and the like. headers, and ample lifts, real tuners, and real gearing options. Wheel selections galore...
unfortunatly, we all must wake up from this dream.

but it's true. I called Stripper Motorsports and it's a typo. They are SS headers but the guy could not find who made them. He did verify twice that they were for the SS.
