I believe that the resonator is to dampen the sound, so you don't have as much noise.

A muffler absorbs all noise, where an exhaust system resonator is a vessel designed to cancel out a specific frequency that the muffler and exhaust system cannot. You can always tell a muffler from a resonator as a muffler will go *thud* when you tap it and a resonator will go *ting*.

Resonator on there to kill resonance or drone in the vehicle.

Yep, that stray frequency is what leads a drone noise in the cabin if left unchecked (un-resonated). Like the ZZZzzzzz... noise the older chevy cavalier OHV 2.2's have, or those darn mini cube van US Postal Service LLV's with 2.5L iron dukes. You can hear those things from a mile away... Wuuuuhhhhhhhh..
