I simply would like to change the muffler on my 06 5.3. Something with more flow, more noise and yet not horrible sounding when the engine goes into 4 cyl. mode. Has anyone simply changed the muffler on their 5.3 dod??
I will be keeping the resonator. Just chop in front of it(giant muffler):) , chop in back of it. Put the new one on with a pipe to take up space and weld it. simple.
thanks , JOHN

You might get more noise with a different muffler, but if the 5.3's muffler is anything like that of the 4.2, the thing is HUUUUUUGE and couldn't flow anymore if it tried.

If you simply replace the muffler you'll get a little more sound and a small amoount of flow increase, but if you replace more of the piping you'll get a more audible difference.

I put a Magnaflow 5x11x22 muffler on my 5.3L and kept the resonator on. Now I know I have a V8, but the interior exhaust noise is almost non existant. The Magnaflow is a straight thru design.
But I don't have DOD, so I don't know about any change in sound when that occurs.

I know the stock muffler is huge, but I doubt that is flows as well just because of that. At least my past experience has shown this. I replaced the stock muffler on my Jeep grand Cherokee, which was as big as the I6 envoy muffler and weighed probably 50-60lbs, with a borla muffler and i noticed a huge difference. I bet the stock muffler on these is probably the same, huge but lacks flow.
