I was wondering if anyone has experienced any ticking noises after the engine has warmed up. My sounds fine on start up, but after driving for 10-15 min it has a ticking sound while at idle. I've had the exhaust manifold tsb performed and fan clutch replaced and it still ticks

i was going to suggest that you looked at the fan clutch..but if thats new then maybe your getting that piston slap noise..awhile back there were numerous posts about this. mine was doing the same but i replaced the clutch and was good to go
here is just one of the threads

if u feel its coming internally from the engine, then I'd say it was the hydraulic rockers... i think the only cure would be to install a new head onto our I6... might be doing that soon if i get the money, with a small p&p job :p

Its the lifters tapping, normal unless it starts getting louder.

Do you know where a guy can get a picture of the lifters on these DOHC LL8's? I would like to get a snapshot of the guts of this engine. :undecided
Along with the cam drive drive setup too.

Does the computer have to be reprogrammed after replacing the fan clutch. I replace the fan clutch myself. Purchased from local dealership.

There is an update (reflash) but I have heard many guys say that it worked fine without it.

I have beening hearing a chirp/ticking noise for a year. 02, 4.2 TB. I thought it was the exhaust manifold. I just observed a crack on a plate on the exhaust side of the head. I see the exhaust soot. I haven't indentied the part yet. I was quite faint in the begining and I not so noticeable when the engine is warm.

I have a similar sounding issue with my 03 I6. Ticking only when the motor is warm. Fan clutch has been replaced. The ticking sounds like it is coming from inside of the top side of engine. My mechanic said to put in Lucus oil conditioner; I did but no improvement.
He says that opening up that engine is expensive. It sounds kind of getto but does not seem to be getting worse.
Did you get anywhere with you issue?

I changed out the plate and gasket, problem solved. The plate had been over tigthen when the transmission fill tube was removed by the dealer.

I just started getting a tick seamingly coming from the top of my front cylinder, only at idle. I believe it's going to be a rocker and I hear it now only because I used to use conventional 10w-30 and now I'm using synthetic 5w-30.
Does anyone know how long this will go before needing major repairs or if it's even a significant issue?:undecided

I have a very similar sounding issue with my son's 03 I6. The tick can only be heard at idle and after the engine is warm. 2 mechanics both said not to worry about it that opening the engine was not an option at this point. They both suggested adding an oil conditioner, which I did without an improvement.
Did you get the noise to stop? I'd be willing to change to another oil if I thought it would. It sounds a little ghetto and I doubt I could sell the car with that noise.

I have the similar ticking. Mine is more when accelerating after engine is warm, fairly quick ticking. Almost like a poker card in the wheel of a bicycle. I do have the slower ticking noise when TB I6 is just started which I hear is normal and goes away once the engine is warm. My ticking when warm on acceleration does not seem as loud as the engine warming up ticking noise. Please help as I can not afford to put any more money out on this 03 TB. Thank you
