View Full Version : Exhaust Tip

I bought a 2.75" inlet / 3" outlet x 12" long chrome exhaust tip for my EXT and proceeded to hack off the turndown about 3-4" out from the muffler. The exhaust tip won't fit over the part of the tailpipe that is left, but I notice that the tailpipe is slightly smaller in the first half inch or so out of the muffler. Anyone know how much of the tailpipe I have to leave for the weld to hold?

I was just going to have it tack-welded on in 3 places, but I can have a bead run all the way around if that means that I can cut the tailpipe off closer to the muffler. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Matt, can you post som epics when you are done with it? I wanna get rid of the stock pipe and put something nice looking on there, as I cant afford an exhaust. Thanks, and Im sorry about not being able to help, as I have no clue how to weld!

FattyTBExt,

Did you buy the Gibson tip? If so I am surprised it doesn't fit. When I put mine on I cut the stock tip about 3-4 inches from the resonator. I tried to leave as much of the straight portion as possible. The Gibson tip fit over it pretty easily, also most too easily. I actually took a large pair of adjustable pliers and deformed the end a little to get a tighter fit to the Gibson tip. Do you think you could do the same thing to try to make your tip fit?

No, I bought a tip from Summit Racing. It was only $22.95 and the quality is very good for the price. I wanted the Gibson one, but my current budget dictated otherwise. My mother-in-law lives an exit before Summit on Rt 76, so I make frequent trips there. :D

The problem is the inlet on the tip is the exact size of the tailpipe. So it doesn't slide on all the way. Judging by the way the tailpipe is welded at the muffler, I would assume that running a bead all the way around would secure the tip well enough, but I'm just looking for confirmation from someone with a little more welding knowledge than I have. I'm not sure how much weight the weld can support.

And of course I will take pics, Erik. As a matter of fact, it even looks better already since I hacked off the turndown and painted the bare metal from the cut with VHT Engine Enamel (black, of course).

Matt, couldn't you get a tailpipe expander and make the opening a little larger so it would go on more :undecided

Everytime I stop in Summit Racing it costs me money :duh: :p

Bill, do you think the tailpipe expander could expand the inlet on the tip slightly or do you think the steel might be a little too strong? I think the tailpipe would have been easier to expand than the new chrome tip. Too bad it's the chrome tip that needs expanded. :duh:

P.S. Where would I get an expander or would the exhaust place have one?

Might "rent" one at an Auto Zone or similiar that rents tools out to customers.

Exhaust place should have them.

What is a resonator?

FattyTBEXT
10-05-2005, 07:29 PM
The resonator is actually that big ugly thing at the end of your exhaust system. The muffler is under the middle of your truck. Most don't recommend removing that big ugly resonator unless you plan to replace it with yet another muffler... :m2:

Check out my Gallery pics. I did the same thing. Hacked off the downturn andput the tip over the sraight portion. I got a 2.75 inlet to 4 inch outlet on Ebay for about $12 but I don't remember the brand. It is stainless steel and appears to be high quality. JJ

JJ, thats exactly the kind of tip I want to get, sleek, and simple, but good looking and doesnt stick out from the truck!! The last part is most important to me, I dont want anyone hitting themselves on my exhaust tip.

I put mine on already, Erik, but it sticks out about as far as my hitch cover. I didn't want to to stick out quite that far but it looks pretty good and has a good sound. It's only there until this exhaust goes bad and I replace it with duals. :D

By just adding a tip, does the sound changes?

FattyTBEXT

Yeah, mine did just a little bit (possibly because of the rolled edge). It's not very noticeable when I'm driving. I can tell, but most probably wouldn't. And it definitely sounds different when I first start it and then go listen to it.

Are we spending the $$$$ for the Borla?? (Hence the 4 $ signs, hehe.)

I want to just have an exhaust that sounds a little bit more when I stomp the gas, but is still mellow enough for the 6+ hours trips I make.

No, I'll go custom for 2 reasons...

1. $1000 could buy me a nice DVD system for the kids
2. The Borla only fits the SWB anyway, not my EXT

Yeah, I agree that 1k could go towards a really good DVD system. Also, I forgot the Borla is only for the SWB. I spaced big time. Ohhh, well.

Fatty,

Pics???? Come on man share the love :) .

I noticed a bit of a change in sound when I put mine on too. Not really noticable when driving but more when the truck is running and you're loading / unloading stuff from the back (the V8 sounds pretty good).

Just did a little research on the tip I purchased. It was a Pilot brand,2.75 to 4 inch. It was 10 inches long. Purchased from sevensaturdays.com on ebay. It cost me $9.99 plus $8 shipping from Calif. to SC. Am well pleased with it and I think sevensaturdays is a frequent seller on ebay.:m2:

Here are the results. Sticks out a lil further than I wanted and is a little dirtier than I wanted (thanks to the "remnants of Tropical Storm such-and-such"), but like I said, it's only til I need a new exhaust and get duals. :D

I know why it's sticking out. If your kids wanna get into the back and can't reach the step, they just step onto the exhaust tip and climb in...

They're also the only ones that use the running boards.

I was thinking about doing the same but that sticks out alot farther than i would like it to. can it be sinched up right next to the resinator more?

FattyTBEXT
10-09-2005, 04:26 PM
Yeah, mine was supposed to. But I didn't wanna cut off the tailpipe too short and I didn't wanna use a tailpipe expander on the tip itself because it could cause the chrome to crack. I'm not sure, but you might be able to use a 3" instead of the 2.75" inlet that I used. My tailpipe coming out of the resonator was a hair over 2.75", and that's where I had problems...

P.S. Graystone's tip goes all the way to the resonator, I think.

FattyTB,
Still looks good though. My tip pretty much touches the weld bead at the resonator. It slid up there pretty easily. Will yours slid up any more? It looks like in the picture you have an inch or so that you could slide it up. Maybe a BFH could help?:)

Matt, looks great, but I think I want a slightly shorter tip.

P.S. I like your hitch cover!! Ive got the same one, and when I get my colormatched grille and everything else I need painted, I am going to have it painted as well.

Nice tip! I might end up doing somthing like that if we buy out the truck, or once the exhaust system gets a little quiter caz of buildup, i'll get a custom system built (prolly flowmaster components)

The size was right, but for some reason, the chrome tip was so tight on the tailpipe that I needed WD-40 and a rubber mallet to get it on that far. :duh:

My hitch cover is simulated carbon fiber, and it's made by Bully. Is that the same one you have, Erik? I've never seen another one besides mine. :undecided

Ooops, no, its not. Mine is made by Bully also I think, but it is a gold bowtie that is about 4-6 in wide.
