Hi all,
This is my first post.I own a 02 envoy with 180,000 Km.I have had a 4x4 problem the last year and nobody knows how to fix it.When driving in 2wd the transfer case sometimes slipps into neutral all lights still indicate 2wd,have to pull over stop the truck and shut it off to prevent grinding, shift switch to A4WD to get something to engage to move.Sometimes on snow the A4WD works and so does the 4x4 and LO.When I switch to
A4WD, 4x4, And 4x4 LOW it all lights up but it isn't actually in 4x4 it still gives me only 2wd but lights all indicate correctly. I here the actuator working, and I have had it to the dealer a dozen times and can't find the problem. Also I had it reprogrammed a new module installed on the transfer case and Also had it completely removed and taken apart by the dealership and nothing was found.I think the only thing left is the dash switch and the actuator but it seems that they are working okay.I also tried the neutral selector today and it lighed up correctly but I could still drive forward whats up with that,
if anyone can help it would be great:confused:

If you can put it in neutral, and it still goes forward, you have a transmission problem. Sounds like its slipping in and out of gear.

Transmission works fine its in the transfer case, when transfercase selected to neutral its still in gear, I have to try a couple of times for it to work

I would replace the switch. Even if the lights work correctly the switch may not, this would cause no signal to be sent to the computer to make the transfer case engage or dis-engage.

I wasn't aware you could shift the transfer case to neutral. I thought it only selected 2hi, A4WD, 4HI, and 4LO.

Ya the neutral is kind of hidden, when in 2wd and tranny in neutral move selector to neutral whick is past the low selector and hold it there for a few seconds and it will switch, I'm not sure if it is the switch on the dash because I here the motor working on every selector, it seems like it is not alligning in the correct spot, hate to spend $ to buy a motor and it not being the fault

Hey cool find! I was wondering what that position all the way to the right was on the dash selector switch. A true transfer case neutral would make the GMT360 ground towable should you need to.

Hmm...:undecided Can't get it to work on my 2005 LS 4x4. The dash switch does have an LED for "N", but she wont go there.

From the 2005 owners manual,
Shifting into NEUTRAL
Before shifting the transfer case to NEUTRAL, first
make sure the vehicle is parked so that it will not roll.
1. Set the parking brake.
2. Start the vehicle.
3. Put the transmission in NEUTRAL (N).
4. Turn the transfer case knob all of the way past 4LO
and hold it there for a minimum of 10 seconds. The
neutral indicator light will come on.
5. Shift the transmission to REVERSE (R) for
one second, then shift the transmission to
DRIVE (D) for one second.
6. Place the transmission shift lever in PARK (P).
7. Turn the ignition to LOCK.
8. For info on towing your vehicle see Recreational
Vehicle Towing on page 4-50.
Shifting Out of NEUTRAL
To shift the transfer case out of NEUTRAL, do
the following:
1. Set the parking brake and apply the regular
brake pedal.
2. Start the vehicle with the transmission in PARK (P).
3. Turn the transfer case knob to the desired shift
position (2HI, 4HI or A4WD).
4. Put the transmission in NEUTRAL (N).
5. Release the parking brake.
6. After the transfer case has shifted out of NEUTRAL,
the indicator light will go out. Shift the transmission
lever to the desired position.
A re-engagement sound is normal when shifting out
of NEUTRAL.
If it don't work you may have to repeat above procedure while standing on your head and rubbing your tummy, or something like that. :D :D

Hehehe... yeah that would make sense to read the manual!:drool Funny though. I did steps 1-4 & never got the N light, but I'm pretty sure I started the engine before setting the P-brake.:undecided Oh well. Have to try it tomorrow.

Yep! Works like a champ. Just don't be a knuclehead like me & jamb the transmission in park after cycling from R to D with the 4x4 selector switch is in neutral mode.:x [Keep the floor shifter in N the whole time the dash switch in in N] The transfer case went GRRRRRIND!! since the transmission was probably still coasting down. My kids were in the back giving me the "Dad? What was that noise?" routine.
