So I brought my blazer to my mechanic to get it checked out. He looked at it, and said it has something to do with the front axil(sp). He said he doesn't have tools to fix it, so I have to take it to the small dealership in town, and if they can't, a larger one about 70 miles away. MY question is, does anyone know what may be wrong and what the $$$$ is the fix it?

Thanks
Kyle

to be honest, sounds like he didnt' know what he was looking at with all the electronics involved here. A dealership should be able to properly diagnose the problem.

i have to agree.I mean how can you be a mechanic and say "Sorry can't do that, don't have the tool"
or maybe he doesn't know how to fix it

Well he is a friend of my dad's and has a fairly small shop. I will take it to the dealer tomorrow after school and let them take a peak and see what they say.

Also. maybe I should have said this earlier, we live on a big hill, so 4wd is a necessary. When after it snowed, I tried to put it in 4wd, it quit blinking, so I started driving up the hill. After about 2 feet of driving, i heard a clunk and then grinding.

Could anyone diagnose what happened now?

one of the 4wd guys will chime in soon.;) these things have a few electronic bugs to them. Some of the fixes are as simple as pulling a fuse and putting it back in. Give them time, they will answer.

The reason to pull the fuse is not to see if it is bad. With the truck running you need to pull the fuse (I forget which one) to make the transfer case control module reset. It is an electronic part and pulling this fuse will make it reset if it is not totally bad and you may get your 4WD back.

Keep in mind that this is most likely not a permanent fix and the problem will may back.

Found it!!!! Fuse #8 in the fuse block under the hood. This is for the Automatic Tansfer Case.

ive also noticed my 4wd isnt working. The Lights on my auto4wd toggl switch no longer light up, i can still turn the switch but nothign happens? has this problem been encountered, is it just the falty fuse or is the entire switch bad?

Had the same problem a little over a year ago. I disconnected the battery for approx. 3-4 minutes, then reconnected and it works fine and haven't had a problem since.

I found out about this fix through the forum, it's probably not the perminant fix but it's worked out fine for me so far.

Sorry...Typo.... I ment to say WITH THE TRUCK NOT RUNNING. Leave the fuse out for about 10-20 seconds then replace it.

Could anyone diagnose what happened now?Yes, it's best (if you want competent help for free) to give us all the details in the first post. Grinding (as you must know) is a mechanical sound to be very cautious of. Did the grinding continue after you took the control switch out of 4HI?

Something in the front differential or disconnect spline ass'y could have broken. Something (clutch plates?) in the transfer case could have broken. Were you in the habit ox exercising 4WD mode regularly, like every month or so? If not, when was the last time it worked for you?

These are questions a good dealer service writer would ask, to give the mechanic a running start.

If you hadn't heard grinding, recalibrating the encoder motor with the fuse pull might have been the best idea. Now, I think the dealer is the best and safest idea, and you should prepare yourself for an expensive repair. If it comes in cheaper, rejoice. But prepare for the worst.

Well my dad said it's at the dealer now and it's gonna cost some 500 odd bucks to fix it. It supposed to be done Monday or Tuesday.

Our '05 TB had no front axle engagement last spring. You could hear the t-case shift and even into low range but the front axle disconnect would not engage. Took it to the dealer (warranty) and they had to shim the shift fork in the axle disconnect.

As for the small shop stating he can't fix it...I think that shows honesty! :woot: I would rather they admit up front they can't make the proper repair than to try and still have it messed up or the job taking twice as long to repair.

Yeah right away he thought it was the shift fork but then it ended up being something else.

So I got my blazer back a couple days ago. The bill was $796.78.

They had to replace the intermediate shaft bearing assembly. It also says: noticed seal was damaged when removing the ISBA-caused the bearing surface on tripod joint to be damaged beyond repair: need to replace the CV drive shaft also.

I had the same thing happen, mine was a fuse.

Quick story of what not to do. I realized the lights weren't working just as I was about to go off road on the beaches in the Outer Banks. I figured since it worked the month b4, it should work now. DOH! So immediately when I hit the sand I realize the 4x4 isn't working. I couldn't turn around b/c it's real soft right where the road ends so I tried to keep my speed up and headed for the ocean where the sand was packed down by the water. Bad decision. Yea, I got stuck and the tide was coming in. I frantically got out and let air out of the tires, while waves were coming over the running boards. Longest 5 min of my life. I got it unstuck, no damage and headed for the pavement.
