Does anyone here know what a single car hauler trailor weighs. I am looking to get one to haul my truck with but need to know how much the trailor might weigh. If it is to much for the Envoy I will have to buy a truck first!

thanks

FYI: The powertrain cooling tests we run on Trailvoys are maxed at 10,500 lbs gross combined vehicle weights. Take that into consideration when towing heavy loads.

so explain to me what that means

I believe that means you wont want to tow more than ~5000lbs. Say your trailvoy, occupants and gear weighs in at 5500lbs, that leaves you with 5000lbs [to tow] to add up to 10500 combined gross.

lots of variables: trailer size and type of construction. could be anywhere from 1200 to 2200lbs.

So since my truck alone weighs about 3600 lbs plus whatever the trailor weighs. Can I pull it?

1) What engine do you have in your Voy?

2) What gears do you have? (Check glovebox: GU6= 3.42,GT4=3.73,GT5=4.10)

3) 5pass or 7pass (SWB or LWB)?

4) How much does your truck weigh?

5) How much extra stuff are you going to be carrying (you plus how many more people, gear, etc)

These all need to be factored into the question. Length, engine and gears all determine the total weight you can tow plus knowing how much your truck weighs plus gear equals if you can do it or not.

I think your truck weighs much closer to 4600 lbs.

When I went to rent a car trailer (to haul my stripped Trans Am to the sandblaster and paint shop) the trailer rental place told me they would not allow me to haul that trailer with the TB. I told him that my truck came with a Class III hitch, so it shouldn't be a problem.

He said it's not the hitch, but the mass of the trailer and car on it. He said that this trailer would push the TB around and it would be difficult to control. He said I had to have a full-size truck like a Silverado or Suburban/Tahoe.

I borrowed my folk's Suburban and on another occasion a freind's Avalanche.

I also saw someone hauling a truck behind an Envoy - it didn't look good. After seeing that, I understood what the guy at the rental place was talking about.

My $0.02.

Was this for a full size trailer or dolly?

The TB probably could tow the load on virtue of power alone but the fact is short wheelbase vehicles typically don't tow well. They're actually dangerous to tow with if your load isn't balanced or if you're overloaded which it sounds like you may be. I have a 16 ft. tandem trailer with a wood floor and it weighs 1880 lbs. I don't know what the uhauls weigh but I think 2000 lbs is a safe bet. I don't know how much the truck you're hauling weighs but If it's a full size half ton it's probably pushing 4000 lbs. That's alot to have swinging on your back bumper. I use a 3/4 ton to do that kind of towing.

Your TB will handle that load. You will need a trailer with brakes on all wheels as well as a WDH. I towed a 3500# GMC Safari van from Pittsburg, PA to Oswego, NY with ourt TB. It towed great at 65-70 mph. The only issue I felt was the soft rear coil springs. My trailer weighed 1800# and I carried about 200# of tools, spares and straps etc. I ran the TB in 3rd most of the way and on the flats put it in OD to allow the tranny to cool. As soon as she acted like it was bogging down, I put her back in 3rd. I averaged 12 mpg for the trip. It was 6.5 hours each way mostly interstate.

Don't be afraid of using the engine in the upper rpm range. These engines need rpm's to produce any power or torque.

Well yall have me totally confused. Some say no and some say yes. I guess I will just break down and buy me a fullsize truck. Thanks, Brad
