searched other threads and really couldnt find what i was asking

when my friend starts up his tb when cold, 02 i6

it makes a slightly metallic sound that soulds like it coincides with the revolutions of a pulley or pump., coming from front of motor around belt area, it doesnt do it after the vehicle has warmed up for about 2 mins
and never does during driving or startup when it is warm

Could be waterpump, but could also be alternator or the idler pulley. Check out Joel's picture here:

so if i spin them by hand i should be able to duplicate the noise and then find out whats causing it?

Maybe not the exact noise, but you should be able to feel any roughness or any play or drag. They should spin easily and smoothly with the belt off.

FWIW, my idler pulley on my 2002 Envoy spun with no resistance and had no "rough spots". However, when spinning it by hand you could hear the metallic noise
Heres a clip of the noise my Envoy was making with a bad idler pulley:

:x I know, I need to get that engine bay cleaned (ashamed). Its like the 'ol plumbers wife story... the plumber neglects his own home and plumbing because hes too busy with everybody elses projects! lol.

And it was noisier than all hell. Thank god I replaced the idler pulley when I did, Im sure it wouldnt have lasted much longer. Now the 'Voy is as quiet as the day it left the factory line :D

Just a thought, it sounds like it could be the fan clutch failing. When you first start it up and hear the sound, unplug the fan clutch to see if it stops. Standing in front it is on the right hand side of the shroud. Mine was a metallic ticking and it is the signal of a failing fan clutch.

How do you get the plug apart.

This is just a quick check for the serp belt only, won't cost you much time and $0 dollars. If it is the belt you've isolated it and your on your way to a quick fix (fortunately worked for me)
thread is here:

Main text is this so you don't even have to click:

FYI,
Did the water trick I saw posted on this site, (“apply some water on the belt and see if that stops the chirp”), which on my first try with a cup full of water flew all over the place because the fan air. Used a sports water bottle, u know the ones with the pop tops and squeezable, and that worked perfect and I was able to get a good hard stream applied right on the belt, I guess a hose would have worked also. Sure enough the squeak stopped momentarily. Went to Auto Zone and got a belt ,mid grade, they had them for 23.99, 29.99(Duralast) and 39.99 (gatorback/grooved). Borrowed the Serpentine tool (basically a long slender breaker bar) $25 deposit/ $0 cost after return, got to love that. Went ahead and got an idler pulley just in case.($13.99), returned that also. Took the belt off and hand spun all the pulley’s I could, didn’t notice any squeaking so just replaced the belt. Started her up, (NO SQUEALLING/SQUEAKING OR CHIRPING), took a short drive and sat and listened for about 10 minutes and all is good. I was pretty sure the bearings had gone out in something. Basically what I’m getting at is try the water trick mentioned above and then just replace belt before you go replacing other items. 10 minute change time for a novice, don’t let the dealers take your money. By the way this forum is the most in depth and accurate I have ever seen, kudos to all the members.
