My '02 TB made the infamous cooling fan wind roar noise three times within the last eight or ten weeks. Each time it lasted for less than two minutes before stopping but each time it was for a little longer than the time before. Normally a noise that happens only on cold start up, goes away by itself, with weeks between each occurance would cause me to think "Hummm. What was that? If it gets worse/louder/more frequent I should check it out. Sooner or later." Because of having read the many threads about fan clutch problems and because my GM extended warrenty expires in March '07 I took the Trailblazer to the dealer and described the problem exactly as everyone else here has described their failing fan.

The service writer at the dealership was very familiar with the symptoms and he ask if I could drop the TB off in the evening so they could have it cold the next day. I said sure thing, but do you understand this does not happen on every cold start - just once in awhile? The next afternoon the service dept calls and says my TB is ready to go. Later when I arrived at the dealer I signed my name by the X, picked up my keys, and drove home.

Paper work stated the tech took 2.8 hours to test & replaced faulty fan clutch, perform calibration update, and recheck operation. Over $515 ( $355 for parts and $162 for labor) plus sales tax that would have come out of my pocket in a few months if I did not read this forum. Thanks again folks.

P.S. The replacement fan clutch is # 25790869.

To me the sound is the sound when a turbo kicks in on a diesel.

Im sure your TB or Envoy has had the clutch fan kick on when you are stuck in traffic or in a drive thru... "Wooooosssssshhhhhh" right after you take off. Its ok if it does this once in a while, like in the morning (like the old 4.3L Jimmy/Blazer/Envoy's did) or when the engine gets real warm, but when it gets stuck on all the time and you are hearing wooosshh or the whirring of a turbo-like sound constantly, you've got big trouble in little china! :D

it sounds pretty loud.
Its normal for it to make the sound in the AM. A little longer if its a cold morning... as the fluid gets distributed- then it quiets down. Older cars with fan clutches are known for this too.

But if your fan does it for long periods and the temp is fine- or if it gets stuck ON all the time- time to replace.

If your in traffic with a car next to you, or your next to a wall, youll hear this loud sound. 1st time I heard it- I had passenger window down- and I thought A semi was next to me.
You know when youre in rush hour traffic, and a semi accelerates- it makes a wooshing sound... well I thought there was a semi... but no- it was my TB bouncing sound off whatever was next to me.

Mine is doinging more often now sometimes it gets stock... I have about 68XXX miles on it...and it never did it before the warranty expire... I contacted the dealership and they told me that I will need to drop it off
for them to look at it...that they only may need to reset it... has anybody have heard of this before...all I have read about is that you need to replace it ...

Thanks for the input ya'll

What they are referring to is a flash/reprogram of the PCM that includes an updated "patch" for the clutch fan. 9 out of 10 times they will replace the clutch fan assembly and reprogram the PCM with the new update.

they can test the fan.
They hook up their scantool.
and tell the fan to spin at lets say 600 RPM.
if it fails to get to 600 etc they know its bad.

can anyone explain the sound a little better, please.

Go to your local airport. Ask the pilot of any small Piper or Cessna if you may stand right behind the wing where the wing meets the fuselage while he does his engine run up.
