View Full Version : Case Relearn ?

I have a question for you on a Case relearn for a Chevy TB.
I currently have an extra PCM for my TB. I want to send that one into you for tuning. My main question is how do you determine if a relearn is needed. I located a local shop that has a GM scan tool and said they could hook it up to there machine and clear any codes. What exactly are they looking for when they connected it. The guy at the shop didn't really have a clue on what a case relearn was. Is it going to just be a code they need to clear or something else they need to preform ?

Did you read this sticky that the guys made? pretty much explains the whole thing. CASE relearn is not a code to clear, it is a learning process that must be done.

5. The CASE relearn and you

CASE (Crank angle sensor relearn) information is stored in your PCM. If you use the core program, I have to ‘make’ a new PCM for you, which means rewriting the computer with your VIN and current calibration. When we use the GM software to do this, it erases the CASE data. Thus, when you install it into your vehicle in the core program, you need to have the CASE relearn done.

The only way we 100% guarantee it can be done is with a Tech 2 scan tool. The vehicle must be present – so no, we cannot do the CASE relearn for you here at the office for a mail order tune. We are told that some high-end scan tools will do it, but the only surefire way is the Tech 2.

The CASE relearn itself is a simple procedure that only takes a few moments. Finding a dealer to do it can be a little bit of a headache as most service advisors will look at you like you’re crazy when you ask for one. Our customers have had the most success simply by telling them they replaced the crank position sensor, and need a relearn – most dealerships will know what you are talking about then. A dealership or local shop may charge anywhere from zero dollars to over $80, so it may be wise to call ahead and ask before deciding on which one of our programs to use.

You absolutely need to have a CASE relearn done with the core program. An SES light may not come on for it, but you still need to attend to it. Not having a relearn done can result in loss of gas mileage and not getting the most out of the tune.

Question! ..... Crank Angle Sensor... so if the program is "off" and the relearn is not done, does this sensor act as a trigger for timing of the motor in anyway?

in your sticky, as quoted above, you mention that not doing the relearn results in POTENTIALLY reduced performance and bad gas mileage... is driving the vehicle around without the relearn performed damaging the motor as well? or is this sensor not an integral aspect of the engine management system?

what is the worst case scenario, and what damaging effects COULD there be for people that are driving around on PCMs without a case relearn on cores for extended periods of time?

Shibby, it does not necessarily cause damage, you just don't get the full effect of the tune without the relearn. In our instruction manuals we tell people to get it done as soon as they can...quite a few notice a difference in mileage/power afterwards also.

can the relearn be done with a dashhawk?

can the relearn be done with a dashhawk?

Yes, IF the vehicle is CAN compliant. The 4.2L I-6 engine is NOT CAN compliant.

Ive had my tune for like 6 months now and would you believe I still can't find ANYONE to do the relearn? Everyone looks at me like Im crazy.

did you try this?

how many miles on it now?

i just got a check engine light today.... 2 months on the tune with no CASE relearn

calling local dealerships now... otherwise the stock PCM is going back in to see if my check engine light goes away

I'd say I probably have put 5k miles on it since I got the tune and no CASE relearn.
