I was going to change it at 500 miles and was wondering what to put back in it. I want to give it a chance to brake in if it is not synthetic oil.

Factory info says it comes with Mobil-1. GM doesn't say to change the oil early in the owners manual, but instructions for crate engines say to change oil at 500 miles. Better safe than sorry. I changed mine at 800 miles because it was the first convenient time for me. I put Mobil-1 5w-30 back in. I used a Mobil-1 M1113 filter mostly because that was the only one available locally that fit. I will probably run this oil fill until the oil life monitor says to change it. I may switch to one of the other synthetics in the future, but for now I'm using what the factory recommends.

The owners manual says to change it at 600 miles or before.

Crate engines are not broken in, therefore they recc. the early change.
Vehicle engines are broken in at the factory, so there is no need to do an early change
The reason for mileage break-in before towing is b/c the rest of the drivetrain is not broken in at the factory :D

Page 404 in mine but maybe I'm reading it wrong. I usually change the oil for the first time on a new car within 500 miles. I can usually turn the filer upside down and watch all the bearing material come out. Looks like gliter coming from the filter. I like to get all the stuff out of there. Then I go to 3k from there on out.

How do you know they are broken in at the factory? Not doubting, just curious.

They must have really changed the manual from the '06 SS. Mine lists chapters, 1 through 7. My page 4-04 talks about drinking and driving.

All I'm seeing is that you should change the oil within 600 mile of the oil light or DIC message appearing
My copy of the 07 manual does not list page #'s, so...http://www.unixboard.de/vb3/images/smilies/sm-nachdenk.gif

The guys who move them from the line to the parking lot do WOT and burnouts. Then they're broken in ...

The vehicles are driven off the line and into the lot to wait to be picked up.
Crate engines shouldn't even be used before they're totally stripped down, cleaned, checked, then re-assembled.
