Wow...you can't beat that, for a 50 dollar starting bid. And, I don't think that anyone really looking to buy that is gonna have lots and lots of competition, as we have sort of a unique size ring gear. Now if only we could find a 4.56 or even higher.

it says 2002 trailblazer xl, don;t those have a slightly larger gear set than the short wheel base? In other words I'm SOL:worried:

Yeah, I would ask the seller to measure the outside diameter of the ring gear, just to be absolutely sure.

This info came from ylab at chevytruckworld ......

I feel your pain, I want 4.10 gears so bad it hurts. I think you may mean you would like to change them to either the 3.73 or 4.10 gears, right? - Those are the other ratios offered on these trucks. While rear uses a 8.5" housing, you want 8.0" gears that will fit into the rear unit and 7.0" for the front. There have been a few owners who have changed gears over at trailvoy.com, apparently the rear differential is pretty easy to swap out and you can even add the G80 option if you don't already have it. Keep in mind that the 3.42 gears use a different carrier than the other ratios and that will need to be swapped also. The front takes more doing to swap the gears from what has been disucussed.....might be easier to find a used front axle at a local salvage yard for a couple hundred than to swap the gears yourself. (That's my plan anyway, grab a low mileage used front differential and swap the entire unit).

The rear gears can be had for around $230 online, the carrier may need to come from the dealer or yard as there doesn't appear to be an aftermarket source. You can find the available parts at: http://completeoffroad.com/wsm/c-12.....envoy.html

I'm still learning about what takes to get this swap done = parts, work, and $$$

...if only we could find a 4.56 or even higher.Don't get greedy. H3's are running 35" tires with 4.56 and their little 5-banger engine and breaking front diffs with torque. And even running the now-closed Lion's Back in Moab. (These are not the Hummer pics, it just shows you the ridge)

I think I've seen a video one time on TV on one of those 'worlds wildest videos' where this idiot in an old bronco got going too fast down there, and I think his brakes went out, and he ended up loosing it down the hill, and landing on his roof.

That's true about getting too much gear under there...With no taller tires than we can clear now, we really don't need any more than a 4.56 yet, as these are pretty torquey motors anyway.

The owner of the truck let his wife take the truck down and as they started off the brakes went out.

Plus we are very limited by the front axle on our Trailvoys. With much searching I have only seen 4.56 gears for the front 7.25 IFS axle/diff. Even if someone really wanted to, they could not go higher than that in their 4WD.

While rear uses a 8.5" housing, you want 8.0" gears that will fit into the rear unit and 7.0" for the front.

Hey James, are you still active on ChevyTruckWorld? Can you ask YLAB over there what he means that it uses the 8.5" housing. That's what I'm kinda working on in another thread. My initial and current plan is to swap the rear axle to get the 8.625" R/P that the V8 (and EXTs) use in order to put 4.56 plus the Auburn locker in there.

However, if the housing is the same, then there is a possibility to keep the axle and to just change the yoke that holds the pinion. Here are the specs I have gathered so far (8.625" first with 8" in [ ]):

Ring gear - 8.625" [8"]
Bolt count - 10 [10]
Pinion spline - 30 [27]
Pinion shaft OD - 1.625" [TBD]
Axle Splines - 30 [28]

You see, Auburn makes their Ected electronic locker with both 30 and 28 splines so a mutant setup may work (if the axle housings are the same):
Ring gear - 8.625"
Pinion spline - 30 (new yoke required)
Axle Splines - 28 (use 28 spline Auburn)

The only worry would be that the axles (28 splines) would be too weak for the torque the 4.56 gears would throw. Although the front CV Shafts are 28 spline as well so maybe it just requires a constant awareness to not overdo things.

Finally, I posted this before but in case people haven't read it. The biggest pain of doing any front differential work is getting the 7.25 housing out of there. The shop manuals procedure includes lifting the engine 3 inches in order to extract it. Once its out, any work on the internals is a piece of cake relatively speaking.

Hey AG
I just posted a request at chevytruckworld for ylab to come over here and help share his info with us . I put a link to this thread .

Cool, I'm going to a reclamation (junk) yard tomorrow to see if thay have any Trailvoys. Maybe I can take a peek at a V8 or EXT and get this rear axle thing settled.
