So I have a couple cases of it left over from my last car and would like to use it up, but the manual and fill cap warn to only use M1 5W/30. I mean the low number is the low temp threshold and since it's getting warmer I should be fine using 10w-30 right? Anyways thanks in advance for any input!

I would say you don't need to use 10w30 in your ss unless you have alot of miles on it, even in the summer. I was debating the same thing. also you will get slightly less gas mileage with a heaver weight.

Ask around and see if you know anyone that needs the 10W-30...get them to trade

10W-30 won't hurt it, but the engine will be a little sluggish when the oil is cold. Run 5W-30 in summer, or 0W-30 in winter - the stock bearing & cylinder wall clearances in these motors is very, very tight; if you have aftermarket bearings or pistons then use the grade the bearing/piston manufacturer tells you.

Run 5W30 in the Winter and in the summer, but 10W30 in summer won't hurt you. In fact, the less difference between the low number and high number, the less monkey business viscosity modifiers have to be added. So in a sense, 10W30 is a less compromised poduct than 5W30 is.

For my LS1, GM listed 5W30 as okay in all temp ranges, and 10W30 optional when above xx (forgot what value was for xx).

You'll be fine...I have RP 10w30 in mine right now...no probelms with the temps warming up...

I agree

of course between the 5w30 and 10w30 the the only difference is supposed to be that the 5w30 is thinner at cool temp startup and is supposed to act the same as the 10w30 when hot .But I agree the oil is more modified

I see some of you are using Royal purple
We used to be sponsored by them for a couple of years.

they make there standard 5w30 10w30 etc.
but we always used there race oils such as #11 or 21 and I think we where using the 41 in our low hp street vehicles.

We almost always picked up a solid 10th of a second with the race oils
I was amazed at the temp difference in my supercharger case just by swapping out the regular gear oil and putting in Royal purple gear oil

exact same thing happened when i bought my 05 grand prix gxp.... had a case of Mobil syn 10W-30 and used it in the 1st oil change. Car ran fine with no change in fuel consumption. ...just make sure you change it before the temps get below 40...

I Work At A Chevy Garage In Florida And All We Carry Is 10w 30 Due To The Heat. 5w 30 Is Needed When Weather Is Below 0. Of Course In Fl We Dont Have That Problem. 10w 30 Is Better In The Heat Since It Is Thicker And Doesnt Break Down As Fast. The Main Reason Why Gm Has 5w 30 Is Because It Gets You Better Gas Mileage Due To It Being Thinner And The Engine Doesnt Have To Work As Hard.
