Sounds like the piston slap that the V8's get. I've never heard it that bad on a trailblazer before. Mine sounds like a diesel in the morning, but it's no where near that bad.

Try a full synthetic oil use a heavier oil 10w30. What kind of oil are you using now?

Welcome to the site!

That sound may be related to something (pin?) on the crankshaft that has slipped and is hitting the camshaft drive pulley. I will see if I can find a link for you to follow or maybe Prosphoto can skip the usual info charge  and point you in the right direction about this?

I have found a link to a water pump that made that sound at 59,000 miles. Check for a fan wobble, looseness or leak at the front?

(That is still funny)

I need the year so I can look for any known issues

sounds to me like a drive belt issue. with no revving sounds to hear the "slap" get worse or better or stay the same relating to RPM's but i will say that the "slap" sounds to slow for a piston slap sound this is an I-6 not a V-8 so the cycle between the slap and the stroke seem off to me.
i would remove the drive belt and start the engine and see if it goes away.
if it does i would suspect a water pump bearing has consumed a chunk of an impeller fin ( real experience on a 229 3.8L Pontiac motor)
listened to it again, could it be a flexplate crack ?
just my :m2:

It's a tough troubleshoot from the keyboard. Like B and Josh say, you will want to eliminate any belt driven accessory first. Top end/valvetrain issues are rare. Judging from the dP sensor on the air intake, this is probably a 2002 4.2L? If so, this could be a cylinder liner issue. Lots of info in regards to that.

Although the liner is a known issue on '02's; theres is a bulletin referencing '03-05 vehicles:

(04 05 Buick Rainier) and (02 03 04 05 Chevrolet TrailBlazer) and (02 03 04 05 GMC Envoy) and (02 03 04 05 Oldsmobile Bravada) and (04 05 Chevrolet Colorado S1 T1) and (04 05 GMC Canyon S1 T1)

If engine block damage is found, engine replacement will be necessary since replacement cylinder liners should not be installed in a damaged engine block.

If no engine block damage is found, engine replacement is not necessary since new cylinder liners can be installed

I would definitely check all external engine possibilities as the others mentioned before condemning an engine failure (not to common on these motors)

I'm still curious to know the answers to my previous questions

I'm new and just picked up the trailblazer yesterday.. I noticed it while idling and it does increase with engine speed.. I will drop the truck at my Mechanic and have him look at it... I am hoping for a waterpump.. Should I replace the Fan clutch also, and of course a new drive belt. I also noticed that my heater Fan doesn't blow on settings 1&2.

It is a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer, with 61,000 miles on it.. I picked it up yesterday from a dealership in North Jersey. I drove it 80 miles back to Philadelphia. I did really notice the noise till I got home..

Here is the VIN range for known blocks with possible sleeve issues:

2002
Chevrolet
TrailBlazer
22100007
22358861

The heater blower issue is a simple fix. Circuit board up behind glove box. Get that knock fixed first ..... that's an issue. Who is that dealer .... sounds like a crook. I wonder how thick that oil is in the crankcase right now? Or how much STP they put in it?

:m2: Good Luck

Dealers in NY have to certify the vehicles (not NYS inspections) b/f they can sell them  Check with your NJ's DMV (or website) to see what NJ's regulations are for dealers http://www.unixboard.de/vb3/images/smilies/sm-nachdenk.gif

If it does increase while revving then it might be the same problems i had... my engine oil was durty as f***, the piston bearings had worn out and were scraped the hell out off, next i had to replace the engine...

I just got it back from my Mechanic and he said it is not the Water pump.. He said the noise is coming from the intake manifold area... IF you put your ear up to it, you can hear it ticking.. He said take it back.....

if your VIN fits in that range you get a BRAND NEW ENGINE if thats the problem ( the sleeve problem) i would bring it to a GM dealer that can offer you the recall fix. IF your vin fits in that range you may have just got a brand new crate motor from GM for your vehicle.

WOOHOO for you, hope its a cylinder liner and you get the fix from GM , that would be SWEET to buy a used vehicle and get a free brand new GM installed crate motor!
SWEET !

Update.... Took the TB to local Chevy Dealer.. The are not biased.. I did not buy the truck from them. Explained my issue and the service manager came out with me and listened to the truck.. He said it is a fuel injector.. He remove the connection and the tapping stopped.. He said I have a Noisy injector.. Hooked it up to the diag machine and said it is working fine, just noisy.. Charge me a $68.00 for the complete Diags. But I left with peace of mind.

Is GM still doing this recall? in the document from one of the other links on in this post it said that "Reimbursement requests are to be submitted by June 30, 04." If they are still doing this is there a chance if you get an engine replacement that they wont pay for it? or could you take it to the dealer and they will tell you whether or not it would be covered? I Just bought my 02 tb with 65xxxk.

The GM service manager I spoke to said the TB's he had to replace the engines in where part of the recall failed with low miles on the truck.

I may get a test injector and try to replace the noisy one... I could get new injectors cheap from Ebay..

Update.. For those of you who have ticking noise.. See if it is coming from your intake manifold area.. I was able to narrow it down.. The plastic intake manifold makes the fuel injector noise amplify. I will soon try to find the loud injector.. But my tick is definity from the intake manifold area.

i remember one time opening hood of my 03.
heard the ticking sound... turned out to be the injectors ticking.
close hood, you cant hear it.... open hood you can hear it. I cant hear it inside the car.

Mine is the loudest with the hood open.. It is only noticeable in the truck if you listen for it and the radio and AC are off.. The dealership said since GM uses plastic intakes, it amplifies all sounds...

UPDATE.... I haven't been on in a few weeks, due to my TB not running right.

The GM rep came to my local dealership and listened to my truck and said the noise was typical.. I said no way let the truck sit overnight and then restart it. It is loudest when cold and is still pretty noticable when warm.

The next morning I get a call from the GM rep and he said that the dealership is going to take a scope to the engine today. He said if it is part of the recall they will replace the eingine for free. But I will have to pay 99.00 for diagnostics.

So we will see this afternoon... If the engine is not replaced, I am gonna trade it in on a newer Trailblazer.

Do they really expect you to pay $99.00 if they determine your problem is the recall on the sleeve???? That is just not right, if you are covered by the recall then GM picks up the entire bill. If, however they determine your TB does not have a bad sleeve then you should have to pay the $99.00.

Update... Well I gave up, the service department said everything is fine with the truck.. But we started 4 Trailblazers on the lot and none of them made the damn noise.

2003 - 40,000 miles
2002 - 71.000 miles
2004 - 52,000 miles
2004 - 44,000 miles

So I traded the truck in on another Trailblazer. I lost 600.00 on my truck. But I ended up with a 2003 LT with 40,000 miles. Leather and fully loaded.

Once I pick up the TB I will.. I bought it 1 day after it was traded in and the dealership wanted to check it over before I buy it.. They said it needed a fan clutch. So they are replacing it.
