One of three things:
- battery
- starter
- ignition switch
How old is the battery?

is there any type of relay link to the starting system that may have gone bad?

Disconnect your battery and check the terminals, they may have loosened up and/or stripped out http://www.unixboard.de/vb3/images/smilies/sm-nachdenk.gif
Could also be a bad ignition switch; do a search for no start concerns & keep us posted
...Please fill out your profile info (under user CP click "edit profile") and tell us about yourself & your TB

Maybe it's an electrical problem? 1st thing you should do is check ALL the fuses under the hood and under the rear left seat! if they're all fine, then disconnect the negative battery terminal for 45 minutes, then reconnect it and try starting it

i would first(AFTER cleaning the terminals) test the battery a properly charged battery will have ~12.6 volts IF the battery has all good cells (6 cells 1.2 volts per cell) and a full charge then start looking into electrical problems. :m2:
fill out your vehicle info is it a V-8 or an I-6?.
keep us posted!

Sometimes I have to turn my key over like 4 times before it will start. When you turn the key all the way like if you were normally starting it it wont do a thing. If you havent tried that you might.

**BEWARE**
i have had nothing but bad experience with autozone and their battery checking system.
the machine is totally automated and gives them a "code" that they enter into the register to confirm the problem was actually found.
the problem with this system is if the battery does take a charge in even 5 cells the machine says the battery is ok. then it removes the surface charge and tries to cycle it again.. i had a battery EXPLODE on my at an autozone after i told him the thing had a shorted cell. and he just couldent listen , the moment the machine load tested it the battery exploded spewing acid all over the floor and counter.
have you tried starting in neutral? maybe thats it!?
also if you need to replace the ignition switch heres a part number from another post. part number 15242754 for an 03 envoy you may want to call your dealer and get a price to see what your looking at as far as price goes.
i have installed a remote start on my 04 TB and as far as i could tell the ignition switch replacement would be a piece of cake if, it is what it looks like.

You guys can test the battery yourself...
1st: make sure it is fully charged (12.6V)
2nd: start the engine & pull the fuel pump relay & fuse until the vehicle dies out
3rd: Hook up your volt meter to the battery
4th: with the fuel system still disabled, crank the truck for 10 seconds
If your voltage falls below 9.6V at any time during the 10 second crank, replace the battery

If all your interior stuff was at all power, but no start, I would think your ignition switch is the culpret. It's a super common failure item. See if cycling the ignition and wiggling the key makes it start.

Does pulling the FP relay disable the automagic starter crank deal? On my 2005, you have little control over how long the starter will crank for. Basically you just bump the ignition and the PCM works the starter by itself. Kind of freaky actually, but my (GM/delphi electronics) 2002 Isuzu Rodeo had the same 'feature', so I was used to it.

You may want to try starting it in Neutral. It may be the switch on your shifter is a little out of whack. If the computer does not think the truck is in Park or Neutral then it will not even try and start it, you will turn the key and get no clicking and no starting but all the lights will light up just like normal.

I havent had to touch one yet & don't know of any how-to's on the ignition switch r/r, but I assume it's mounted in the steering column, near or on the key barrel. You might be able to get something from a GM parts counter person. AFAIK, an ignition switch will be a dealer only item for a 2002 GMT360 chassis.

I agree with above .. but since you have replaced the battery, I would check in or abouts this order ..
Check to make sure it is in PARK all the way. Turn the key to on, foot on brake, shift out of Park, then firmly into PARK again. try to start.
Turn Key to on, foot on brake, shift to NEUTRAL, try to start.
(Both times above, if no start, did the dash lights dim and or voltage on gauge go way down? Did you hear a clicking noise?)
If trying to start in PARK or NEUTRAL, still wont start, it could be either the starter is frozen, (but you should hear a click) or the solenoid is bad.

ilikemy3s & RozmerJJ have the right idea...I think a couple of other members have posted in the past how their switch went out & they had to push the shifter forward to get the PNP (park/neutral position) switch to close

Didn't think about that http://www.unixboard.de/vb3/images/smilies/sm-nachdenk.gif The service info description is kind of vague; but after reading it I think you can crank it as long as you hold the ignition in the Start position. My TB's at the dealer today so I can't verify this until I get it back ;)

ok i tried starting the car in park with the foot on the brake and then shifted it to neutral and tried starting and nothing. i hear a click when i try to start it and thats it. how can i tell if the engine switch is bad. right now i have the whole steering column case off so i i can see everything. when i put the key in and turn it this golden stick behind the cilinoid raises so does that mean that the switch is working? i hate this i cant take it in to a shop or anything beause i cant get the damn thing to start this is so frustrating.

that golden stick is to activate the park lock feature , if your vehicle is out of park in any other position the key will NOT come out.
***ATTENTION*** IF YOU HEAR A CLICK AS IN A STARTER CLICK, then your starter or solenoid is 99% sure shot it "could be" wiring going from the sol. to the starter motor, but either way you'll need to replace it, again IF your starter is clicking with a new battery then your started is bad and your switch is ok.
i would just change the starter its somwhere in the starter albeit the starter motor OR the solenoid switch its all one unit.. as we speak i am calling for a price. napa lifetime 184.50 +27.50 core charge. go to autozone or advance/parts america and get their BEST they have it will be cheaper than that napa quote. i myself would call a dealer also to see what the cost is and warranty terms.
Hope you get it fixed soon.

It should be under the brake booster / intake manifold (general area)...Take a long stick and bang the solenoid on the starter then try starting it again (may need to bang a few times while you have someone else trying to crank)

Yup .. sounds like the solenoid is bad. Hitting with a hammer may get it to start but it wont fix the problem ..

i would change the starter and be done with it , just looked at mine and i belive its a lvl4 on the ol 1-10 scale 10 being motor swap.
its possible to have it towed to a shop that will install the started for you and waive the towing, look for a shop listed as ,, Cook's towing AND repair that type of name indicates a repair shop that has a tower under contract or their own tow rig.
FLAT BED OR DOLLIES ONLY !!!! if its a 4X4.

If u have warranty, it should cover the cost of a tow.
if the warranty does not cover towing i would require them to take it off your deductible. period. also MOST dealers will bill your tow on your repair bill. as long as the tower is under contract for the dealer.
this is what you do.
1) Call your dealer and tell them your problem and you have an extended warranty. ask them who their tower is.
2) call your extended warranty company and tell them your started is bad and you need to replace it under warranty. ask them to make a note that you have called in to the company and NEED this repair. Ask what your deductible is. Ask them how much the fee will be IF the starter is not bad and how many miles are covered under tow to a GM dealer. they BETTER ANSWER 40 miles minimum.
3) call the dealership back and schedule a pickup for your truck give them your after market warranty info and ask them an est. time you can pick it up.
4) last but not least ask if they offer a courtesy van ride TO the dealer when your vehicle is done.
thats the way to do it so ALL of your bases are covered.
Gratz you have a running truck again. and welcome to trailvoy :D:thx

the crank is inside the transmission bell housing and at no point EVER should you strike the crankshaft with anything EVER.
get the tow to the dealer and get that starter replaced.

 I think you need a special golden stick extractor for that! Seriously tho- I think the other fellas are on to something, but; I don't think I've ever seen a failed starter/starter solenoid on a 4.2L. You're doing some fine troubleshooting, but I would not change any parts until you have the truck looked at by a trusted shop, tech, etc.

:iagree: Considering a reman. starter runs from 150.00 to around 270.00 - it might be better to spend the $$ on an hour of labor at a dealership or other trusted shop. Unless - unlike Joel and I, you have "FULL" pockets! :)
IIRC There have been quite a few 02's with bad ign. switches!
