Yeah I know the feeling! After OIF 1 I spent almost 2 years recovering and had a MMRB during the first year and they let me stay without having to go to a MEB. I actually asked to have the MMRB first so I could plead my case just incase they thought I wouldn't be able to continue to serve. Needless to say I deployed again and later this year I'm looking at tour #3. I am a little peeved about having to spend 15 months vs 12 now, especially since I havn't seen my wife and kids much since I came back this time. It's rough and I think about getting out sometimes but we'll see how the next couple of years goes before I have to make a career decision.

Good luck to you in what ever you decide to do and thanks for giving us your better years!:)

Man I dont think I could handle being deployed for 15 months at a time! I could barely stand going on 90 day patrols in the Coast Guard. Well I guess when I was single it wasn't so bad:)

15 months would suck. We did the 6 month deployments that somehow always ended up being more like 8 or 9 months. Still, thats a crap load better than 15. Plus, being on a ship is CAKE compared to being on the ground. Did the grunt crap many years ago. Thats why I went in to the Navy the second time around!:D

I had the pleasure of working in a joint environment this last tour and worked with every branch even the CG and I know the longer TCS assignments are affecting everyone. I definitely enjoyed working with the other services and got alot of good experience from it:). I don't support the longer TCS's, especially since most units don't end up getting the stabilization they are promised:hissy:. I just hope things start getting better so we can all take a well deserved break. These deployments are wearing all the branches down!

hey guys, sorry to bring this thread back if anyone cares. i'm just looking for any marines, or anyone for that matter in or around the camp leijeune, nc area. i see a dozen or so TBs around the base every day, and i can't believe none of them are members. the reason i ask is i'm looking for some people that would be interested in hitting some trails in the area. i also haven't seen any active duty marines around here, and just curious to know if i'm all alone here. thanks guys.

Small world. Looks like you must have gone thru Cav Scout Basic/AIT in '89 as well. At Ft. Knox I assume? I was there Sept-Dec '89. I don't remember the unit, but SSG Foote (we called him Bigfoot) was my D.S. After that, I went to Ft. Benning GA for 2 years (except the 7 mo in Desert Shield/Storm).

The Gov't could never pay you guys enough money!!! I always appreciate our armed services you guys are awesome! I want to say THANKS for your service. Not many peolple can appreciate what you guys do. I can only imagine the trails and tribualtions most of you have went through. My father was in WWII, a marine. I didn't even know about his service until my uncle told me. He never thought himself a hero. I heard stories fo what he did after he passed. Just incredible what he and you guys go through during war. I hope this message finds all of you well. For those still waiting to come home remember there are people here who appreciate, actually beyond appreciation for what you have done for us and our beloved country.

Times have changed....... for the better! When I got out in 1980 as an AMH2 (E-5), I was making about $700.00 a month.

Well I can tell you I'm an E-6 with barely over six years of service and I make a little more than half of that $48,000 a year salary! So that's where time in service (your 14 years) starts to count otherwise if my wife didn't work full time then we would barely scrape by.

Thank goodness for the Army re-enlistment bonus otherwise I could have never built my SS the way I wanted. Hell the only reason I could even afford the SS is just because it's the only car payment we have. We paid off the other TB 3 years early thanks to 2 deployments to Iraq and the fact that the wife has a job.
Don’t get me wrong I'm not complaining about pay; I didn't join thinking I would get rich that's for sure and I was making better money than I am now before I decided to join!

I just like the fact of serving even though it's a pain most of the time!

is in the USMC stationed in Pendleton (Fox 2/5). He just got back from his first trip to Iraq last month and is now enjoying three weeks here at home. Our oldest daughter leaves for MCRD Paris Island this Monday.

My son got the title "luckiest Marine in Iraq" the second day he was in country. While on patrol just outside of his base in Ramadi he stepped on an IED. As the bomb went off he saw everything happen in slow motion then suddenly fast forward. He thought his legs were gone until he realized that he was still standing. The IED was a 155mm shell that should have killed him and all of those within 50' of where he was standing. The only reason it didn't, the person who planted the shell didn't put the blasting cap in the powder charge. Metal from the blasting cap tore into his right ring finger and he was nearly death for an hour afterwards but other then that he was fine.

The next day they were on patrol in another section of the city. A firefight broke out about 500m in front of their patrol. They started to work their way to the fight when they crossed through a backyard. His machine gun team stopped behind a brick wall to get their bearings. Just as he turned around to speak to one of his troops bullets ripped apart the wall behind his head. If they hadn't of stopped right at that second those rounds would have killed him. He was offered the Purple Heart for the IED wound but turned it down saying that he didn't think a sore finger was worthy of such an honor.
