View Full Version : G2 Caliper Paint Question

I ordered a G2 red caliper paint kit fom Pace last fall and decided to wait for spring to do it. So now it is time. Have a couple questions for those who have done it.
First of all I am planning to do only the center part red and leave the outside silver. I think I will order the G2 silver kit so I can do it at the same time. Figured its better to epoxy that part as well instead of letting it rust.
To do it right I am assuming I am going to have to pull the caliper and pads so I can get everything covered and tape off any sliding surfaces.
So looking for any tips about the process and if there is plenty of paint in the kit? If I am ordering a silver kit, I have no issues with ordering another red kit. Would hate to be a little short while I am tore down.
Any "tips" would be appreciated.

I just did my TBSS and wifes 330I over the weekend. I didn't tape anything off and just brushed the areas I could get to. It would be better to remove everything, but not completely necessary.
As far as how far the paint will go; you could easily do three or four cars with one can. I normally do three coats but you could get away with two if you wanted to.

Hi Rich -
First, purchase the silver-G2 kit that I have for sale. It'll save you a few $$. :) (see my FS ad in the classifieds)
Second, do you want it to look like this:

Or this:

Either case, the red/silver combo looks stellar....
The best way to do it is to remove the caliper and bracket. Epoxy paint the bracket on your dining room table (LOL), and for the caliper use a bungee cord to let it "hang" in the wheelwell while you paint the whole thing. This is the only way you will be able to paint inside/around/outside the whole assembly, and the only way you will guarantee that they'll come out looking like mine above.
The "short-of-time" way (and it looks like it too, BTW) is to leave the caliper/brackets/pads all assembled and paint it while still attached to the vehicle. This method you can't nearly get in all of the nooks and corners like you can with them removed. Not recommended unless you're only going for the look of a 10-foot'er.
To do all 4 brakes they say you can do it with one kit. On both the GTP and Firehawk I used 2 kits, one of each color, and I still had about half-jar left over of each color. I can see how one "kit" could do a set of 4 brakes, but not much, if any more than that. So, no worries there.
HELPFUL TIP: Since the kit requires you to pour the curing additive into the "paint", you then are limited with the time available to complete the painting / multiple coats (only a few hours, if even that long...before it completely hardens). I found it is MUCH MUCH easier to split the paint into two "halves" - cleaned out Gerber babyfood jars work excellent - and then only pour half of the curing-additive into one of the babyfood jars. This enabled me to only do the fronts (or rears) on one weekend, and then tackle the rest of the job at a later date without having to purchase another kit of each color. Multiple coats makes it look much better, I normally put on 3 coats IIRC....
The last step should be several coats of high-temp clearcoat. This adds an extra layer of protection and shine. You can do this before or after re-assembly to the rotor; just make sure you carefully tape-off and newspaper protect the rest of the surrounding area (including the rotor) when you spray the caliper.

Nice pics and yes thats the look.
Thanks for the great info. I want to be ready when I tear into it !
PM on the way.

Has anyone tried to spray the G2 paint on their calipers? Does painting with the brush leave any brush strokes in the paint, or does it all flow together well? Would it be any easier to spray the calipers vs. paint with the brush?

Can't spray the G2 - much too thick. It is viscous enough to let the brush-strokes "flow" out and level the surface, yet not create drip-lines.
