I have checked my P/S fluid on occasion, and every time i do theres a big realese of pressure when i do . this is with the truck off when i take off the P/S cap its like a rushing sound spelled it sounds like this .. PHHHIISTTT and some fluid comes mists out.
background: never changed the fluid, the fluid is full to the cold line when cold and hot line when hot and by looking at it, the fluid is clear to murky and smells like iron... like a wet piece of steel. well like steel wool thats wet thats exactly what is smells like. no noise, steering has never changed. works smooth
anyone with ideas (IEATGLUE) and time involved to change the pump?
thanks
Josh

Same here, get a little pssst after running the engine and then opening the power steering reservoir.

That's funny. I just checked my PSF the other day & my reservoir was under a vacuum when I loosened the cap. PfffffffffTTT! (had to get the sound effect in there... it's either that or the 3-bean salad?! :ugh:)

No noise + good level + fairly clean to clean = good to go
No worries Josh, sounds like you're in good shape

what causes this release of pressure is this normal?

just a guess here, but i would think its a sealed system, and when its hot (joel) and you check it the fluid has expanded and taken more space lowering the amount of air volume. and when its cold (me) then its lower leaving more volume and after it gets hot the air is put under pressure.
when its hot and checked the air volume is lower until it cools then creates a vacuum and if checked when cold it will swwwwit instead of PFFFFFT.
hope this helps LOL

Its ok to just open the cap anytime it won't cause any problems right? Wouldn't mind checking mine and seeing how things are holding up.
