So...
I was wondering what kind of oil is the best to use for a I6 engine, like mine.
I heard that 5w 30 royal purple full synthetic is good but I talked to a guy at autozone and he said hes heard horror stories of people using full syn. and having they're engine bearings go out on them the same day they switch.
My questions are:
1. What oil and filter do you guys use?
2. Is it recomended to use full synthetic or not?
3. What do you all recommend?
:thx

I have heard the same thing about running a syn oil thru the I6.
I use Mobil 1 clean 5000, 5w-30w

I started using full synthetic at 47000 miles. I will never go back.

Are you serious? I'd take what a guy at Auto Zone said with a very small grain of salt. There are a lot of myths out there!
I personally use Mobil 1 in my TB I6 - 34K no problems. My Ford van has over 200K -synthetic oil (Valvoline) for the first 150K and syn. blend for the remainder with absolutely NO problems whatsoever!

I'd be very skeptical of that statement... About the only problems you'll encounter with synthetic is that any small oil leaks you currently have will become bigger ones...

:iagree: Synthetic is the best way to go, especially if you would like to maximize the time between oil changes. There are a lot of high performance vehicles that come with a factory fill of Mobil 1 (TBSS is one of them).
I'm not so sure about the leak thing; but if I ever see a leak in any of my vehicles, it gets fixed by the next scheduled oil change  as anyone else should be doing b/c putting off repairs only leads to more costly repairs in the future :duh:
The big question (if you've been thinking about using synthetic) is which brand to use http://www.unixboard.de/vb3/images/smilies/sm-nachdenk.gif
I've been doing a lot of research lately, and it seems the best 3 are Mobil 1, Amsol, & Royal Purple
Mobil 1 being the most cost effective...using the extended performance with a Mobil 1 synthetic oil filter can extend your oil change intervals upwards or 15K or till your oil change light comes on, whichever is first
Amsol seems to be a little better, guaranteeing a longer change interval when used with their EA oil filters (up to 25K, but I'd still go with the oil change light/monitor)
Royal Purple being the most expensive, but I stopped my research at Amsol; sorry.

I have been using genuine GM oil filters, will this have an issue with the syn oil???????. My father has been using Mobil 1 syn in his SSR, but I am unclear on what filter brand he is using.

Im thinking of going with the royal purple full syn 5W30 is that the right kind of oil? should I be using a different weight or what?
And what filter is a best choice for it?
P.S. I just found out today that walmart is now carrying royal purple its only like $6.72 a bottle. talk about saving money, I saw it at a different autoparts store and they were sellin it for almost 9 bucks a bottle.

I have a 2005 EXT that I put Royal Purple in the day I drove it of the lot 31,000 miles ago. Not a single problem. When I change my oil it comes out the same color it goes in. Dark Purple. Its expensive as hell but its the best. I also use a K&N filter. Works for me!!!!

:duh: The bad information given out in regards to motor oils never ceases to amaze me. Unless you use your 4.2L in extremes of ambient temperature, or choose to extend your oil change intervals, you, or your 4.2L will not notice the difference between conventional or synthetic. There is no magic. Your 4.2L will run perfectly on conventional or synthetic.

Now im a little bit weary of going past the 3000 mile marker that has you changing your oil every time. if I use the royal purple or any oil for that matter can you keep driving until the change oil light comes on. I live in Vegas and it's starting to get hot (90 or so) I just dont want to damage anything in my wonderful TB!! :D

I live in hawaii and I use the oil change light to change mine. Ive changed it 3 times in 31,000 miles and like I said before same color every time. I agree that if you change it every 3000 miles then it wont matter what you use. I personally will never use anything else again.

mobile 1 for me.
from RP's site:
"Royal Purple's superior oxidation stability enable oil changes to be extended up to 12,000 miles (or more depending on the equipment), saving money, saving time and reducing the amount of used oil that must be disposed of."

Count me as another guy who believes this. I'm going to synthetic because I want to extend the change interval on my 07 TB to 5 or 6,000 miles. Conventional oil might do fine at this interval, but I've been changing at 3,000 miles for so many years on my other vehicles that I would feel guilty not going synthetic. The biggest question I have is.....is there really a difference among synthetics? I've got my favorite conventional oil...but I bet in reality there is little to no performance difference among the brands that have the same API symbol and weight.
Now if I lived up north where it gets cooold, I'd be synthetic for sure.
Filter? Why everyone knows my favorite brand Wix is the best.

I run synthetic in my 03 GMC Sierra (5.3L), my daughters 05 Aveo (1.6L), my TBSS and I run synthethic blend in my wifes 99 Honda Accord. Haven't had a bit of trouble yet.
I switched from Mobil 1 to Pennzoil Platinum in the TBSS and the GMC. They both seem to run just a little smoother...but I could be imagining things. :weird:

I was just at Advanced auto yesterday trying to decide which kind of oil and filter to get. I had my mind set on a synthetic blend, but pennzoil platinum and Q full synthetic were both buy one get one free. Unfortunately, they didn't have 5w30 of both. I was about to get Q in the 10w30, but decided to just get a synthetic blend. Went with Motorcraft 5w30. Also went with a Purolator pure one filter, because I heard they were pretty good.

I use Castrol Syntec, and have used it in my last three vehicles. As far as TB's go, I switched around 34K on my 2002 TB, and on the 2006 I got in Nov I dumped the reg crap out around 6K and put in the Syntec. I go about 6-7K between changes and have never had any adverse effects.

I run dino oil in both my TB's and change it and the filter every 5-6K. My 02' has just under 100K with no issues at all and my 05' has just under 52K of hard use and it is running like a top.
The I6 was designed to be run on Dino oil and changed when the OLM turns on. It uses 7 quarts to ensure more than enough oil to last that long but I just feel the need to do it at 5-6K. The only reason I see to switch to a syn oil is to extend to the 10K mark for oil changes then you will either have to use an extended change filter or do a filter drop at 5-6K.
Just my opinion, everyone has one.
04TBlazer
05-04-2007, 08:03 PM
he also explained how its possible to park a car for a undetermined length of time and the OLM will recognize that the oil has been compromised.
Just bought my 04 last week according to the dealer sticker the oil is due in 1800 miles/6/5/07 which ever comes first but the oil light came on. The dipstick shows the oil is still clear!
Should I change it to get it over with.

I would just so you know when and the true use of the TB.
I just bought my 02 TB with 68500 on it and will be changing the oil to a synthetic this weekend. The main reason I am going synth is because I am lazy. I admit it. I will change the oil every 3000 if it is conventional but if I can get to 6k with out really any worry, it think it is worth a few extra bucks cause its one less thing I have to do. Plus I live in OK where the summer temps easily get to a nice 120 during the day and a cool 85 at night and the extended length should get me through the summer.
I have not decided on a brand but do think an extended life filter is a must.
But that is just my two cents worth:)

is 10W49 too "thick" for our i6?
i just did my oil change like 300 miles ago and i thinki'm hearing a ticking sound from the engine. I don't want to mess anything up.
Its an 02 w/ 87,XXX i used Castrol high mileage, simply b/c i have an oil leak (RMS) and i don't have them money to fix it now, so the guy at auto zone said even w/o the oil leak i should use 10W40 b/c of the mileage

Dude...stop listening to everything the parts guys tell you :duh: the 10W40 may slow the oil leak, but it also may compromise the efficiency of your I6 http://www.unixboard.de/vb3/images/smilies/sm-nachdenk.gif
Always stick w/ what is recommended for your engine...oil leak or not / no matter what the mileage is
The best thing to do is get the oil leak fixed; you've taken on a lot of repairs...have you thought about giving it a try? I know it's a big job (t-case & tranny removal); but if you can get your hands on another vehicle to drive around for a few days, you can take your time with it & do it right :undecided
Otherwise, finding someone who's good at R&Ring the tranny in these should be able to get it done for you relatively quickly. Unfortunately, I don't have access to labor times today, so I can't get you an estimate on the labor time required.

I have been using Mobil 1 Extended Life since my first oil change. Current 60k trouble free miles. When I change my oil it looks good.
Not only is this oil great to use for your engine, but for our world. If everyone would use this it would save millions of gallons of oil. 3x's as long between changes and Mobil 1 is not made from crude.

:iagree: in the strongest possible terms! First in an engine that is capable of 300-400K miles, I don't consider 87K to be "high mileage"
Second, how bad is your leak? Is it a few drops on the bottom of the engine, or a nice size puddle on your driveway? If it's a small leak don't worry about it - many vehicles leak a small amount from the RMS. A huge leak is another story and as PROSPHOTO said should be fixed asap.
The owner manual for my 05 states:
"Do not use 10W-40, SAE 20W-50 or any other viscosity grade oil not recommended"!

Rear Main Seal, pretty sure its where the trans connects to the engine.
And blktbon20s, just use 5W-30 oil man, other grades will reduce the efficiency of the engine plus are not needed.

I use Mobil 1 and delco oil filters. The decision is yours, just use 5w30. I drive 500 miles a week so I wanted to lengthen the oil change intervals to 5k. Ive used convention oil up until I bought my tb with no problems.
The misconceptions of automobile service and repair never ceases to amaze me. My favorite is "I need to the engine flushed prior to switching to/from synthetic". I have been asked this multiple times.

I am not familiar with the way the TB oil monitor works, however whenever I change a customers oil at work or home I reset the light regardless of whether it was on or not to avoid any problems. Just my :m2:
