Hey guys, ive recently noticing a weird sound coming from my envoy. With the warmer weather and the windows down, on accelaration, my engine kinda sounds like a school bus!!

Is this normal???

Its an 04 envoy xuv i6 with 30k (still under factory warranty). When i give it gas, it has the "tapping" noise similar to a schoolbus, or a big diesel truck. I dont have any ticking or tapping noise while reving the motor, just when driving and it come from the motor side.

All fluids are in check, but i am switching to mobil 1 once im due for my first change.

Any info would be great!! its going under the knife on tuesday for
-rear rocker panel repaint
-clunking front end
-scratched windows

so if the "school bus" sound is a bad thing, i can tell them what it might be, i hate going into a dealership not knowing what the problem is.

Thanks,
Frank

I'll guess it's your cooling fan, do a search for noisy fan, should be lots of info.

Maybe an exhaust leak.....?

I'd bet on the cooling fan clutch too. I bought mine at 39k, and I got it from a dealer who gave me only a 30 day dealer warrenty. Well, a week after I bought it, I started hearing something maybe close to what you're describing (school buses can make a lot of noises)...and I opened the hood and checked some stuff out. I noticed some play in the cooling fan while it was on...and some wobble on the pully, so I shut it off, and sure enough, I could wiggle it about an inch by hand. Anyway, I made an appointment to go back and have it fixed...but before I could get in...the wobble got so bad that it threw the belt off, and turns out, that when it flew off, it went through the radiator. I took it into the dealer, who told me that all of the sudden, it's not going to be covered by a 30 day dealer powertrain warrenty. To this, I asked...how is a water pump (and accordingly a fan clutch) not part of a powertrain warrenty, it's on the engine? To this, they said...it's not an internal water pump, to which I replied...it's not a freakin boat. So...anyway, I argued with them till the realized they were wrong, and they went ahead and fixed it...So I got my money's worth out of that 30 day dealer warrenty, with a new radiator, water pump, fan clutch, and serpentine. I'd suggest you look at the same things, and check for play...and hope for better luck from the dealer.

I had that type of sound in my 04 XUV. I had a cracked exhaust manifold. Have the dealer check that.
