people talk about how to work with the DOD, but is there any switches out there we can manually make it go to DOD mode? for instance I'm sitting in traffic, I drive in the city quite a bit, and some if it is stop and go 0mph stopped to 5mph back to 0mph...do i need a V8 for that? no...i can just run it on the DOD 4cyl. mode without a problem...its not like i need to get a rush out of getting to 5mph..."ooooo i made 5mph in 0.25 seconds, beat that civic punk...." LOL

from my understanding the ECU decides its good for DOD mode based on speed, engine load, rpms...then it activates a solenoid on the cylinder head via oil pressure to close some valves and then disconnects the spark and fuel from and thus shuts down certain cylinders for 4cyl. operation...so....is there a switch we can install or someone already made professionally that we install that will "simulate" (lack of a better word) to the ECU that it is 'optimal' conditions for DOD mode and thus run on 4 cyl... in theory it would seem like its a fairly simple job, but i'm not an ECU programmer so this is just me talking out of my collective azz thinking this would be good for fuel savings in certain conditions...

I'll toss this at ya... There are (Iam guessing) many sensors that provide input for the computer to make it's decision, big job to trick them all. But, if as u say the computer sends a sig to up pressure in a hydraulic system, it might be easier to trick this side.

I probably wouldn't bother. It seems to come on quick enough anyways. I don't like messing around with sensors because the next thing you know the darn sensor won't let you start the engine.

Just shut it off when your stopped. Almost all the trucks and SUV's do that in Japan. I worry about the starters....but my co-workers in Japan say it's no problem.

shut of the engine when stopped? im pretty sure it takes more gas to restart it then to let it idle... unless u are idled at a stop for like 20 minutes or somethin like that...

I agree, But the Japanese figured that it works somehow. And My experience thus far dealing with Japanese concepts and designs. It's usually pretty accurate.

And in more defense. Why does it take more fuel to start? I've made starting systems for trimmers, lawnmowers, and chainsaws...and you actually need very little fuel to start the engine when its warm.

Not attacking, especially considering i have no proof... but i have heard that, and i guess it makes sense, i know police cars stay on at all times when they get out also but with the key out of course, maybe they are on to something as well

It takes more fuel to get the engine internals moving. If I remember right, it takes around 16 gallons to start a jet engine (don't know about car's).

Yeah, a jet engine is 100% different. No comparison there.

For Internal Combustion Engines the majority of the energy to start comes from the starter or the guy pulling the rope. And when the engine is warm and tuned properly it takes almost no effort to start.
