View Full Version : Wheel Lock Snapped
TB SS

I picked up a set of McGard "premium" wheel locks (P/N 24157) today for the TB SS. First one snapped right off while torquing it down by hand. Not sure if this was a single piece defect or a problem with the stud length being too long for this product. Until I figure it out, I recommend not using these.

You should take them back and ask for a refund, or get them replaced

That sucks
if not the store, the company should be able to refund you

Got the snapped off part removed easily by pounding a 22mm socket over it, then torquing it off.
After measuring the stock lug nuts and the McGard product, the locking lugs are 5/16ths shorter inside. I returned them and got my money back. I should have looked closer, there are truck specific locking lugs available which are longer. The store I went to didn't have the right combination available so I'll have to wait to get them and see how they look. I don't want them sticking out too far, that'd look stupid. :duh:
Anyway.. the moral of the story: be careful in choosing your wheel locks. In the end, I can't fault the McGard product.

Is that the truck (deep) version?
I've already got a set of GM locks on order. Thanks though!

i was at the local pepboys and the book said #24137 for the trailblazer. they are longer than the #24157.
i also called mcguard and they said the #24137 fits the ss too.
i bought them, but i haven't installed them yet.:duh:
how much are the gm locks? and how are they different from the mcguard?

im not sure what your mcgard locks look like, but i had some with the key in the end of the nut. they chewed up the hole in my wheel. never could find a socket that would fit correctly.
i like the gorilla locks. they aren't as noticeable because the key is around the sides of the nut and the socket that comes with it is fits perfectly.
not sure what size your needing but here are some on ebay

i also got a whole set for like $50 for every lug....what can i say im a little paranoid. trust me you'll love them.

http://www.MonteCarloSS.com/TrailBlazerSS/wheel-lock.jpgI don't understand why the TB SS doesn't come with wheel locks from the factory.

Should have come standard from the factory, but oh well.
Installed the McGuard 24137 today, I'm feeling much more secure about leaving the truck unattended at night.

Fish..
Did you use the 24137 version?
To get them off, you'll need a 12 point socket of appropriate size. On the standard McGard's, it's a 22mm socket. Just pound it on over the lock and spin it off. It's rediculously easy. These locks really only hamper the opportunistic lo-pro thiefs without the tools of the trade.
I have yet to put locks back on mine. I haven't tried the McGard 24137's that are recommended above.

No I had the 24157..... I got them off using the removal tool. I tried the
22mm socket it only spun in the lug 21mm was way to tight. Good news is I am now the proud owner of a air compressor and air tools!!!!
Look forward to hear how the 24137 version works out.

I tried ordering GM locks through my local parts counter but the counter guy couldn't determine which were the correct ones. We took a guess and got the wrong ones (external thread version), so I gave up.
Do you have the GM P/N for the version that you know works?
thanks

Hope you get them off. Looks like you recently had them off and spent time polishing your calipers.

me? Nope. I was able to remove them easily as mentioned in the original post. I haven't had any of the wheels off. The calipers are as they came from the dealership.
I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY LOCK I BOTH MINE AT PEPBOYS THEY REFUND THE MONEY BUTT I STILL HAVE A BROKEN LOCK ON MY WHEEL

Removal is pretty easy. Just find a socket that will fit snuggly (I.E. can be tapped onto the lock with a hammer). In my case, a Craftsman 22mm 12 point socket did the trick. Spun the broken lock right off in seconds using a breaker bar.

Any updates on the Mcgard #24137 wheel locks? I got my rims last week, and all I need now is the wheel locks, and tires. I want to get everything now, so when spring time comes, I can install them.
1 question: How many locks do you need for each wheel? and if you buy say 2 sets of 4, are you going to have 2 different lock keys?

watch out that they don't start to rust on you, mine did after 2yrs, on a set of Mille Miglia's

If these are so easy to get off, where are the ones that aren't so easy to take off? Do they not exits?

You can remove any locking lug nut with either a portable Welder and an extra nut, or one of those stripped bolt removing sockets ( with the twisted grooves inside ) .. no problem.
I used the Gorilla locking nut set, cost about $20.

Where can you get the Gorilla locking lugs at? I have a set of ADR Imperial wheels for an '02 Envoy, I believe that I can use the factory lug nuts with these weels since I have a lug nut cover, but I am also going to put a locking lug on each wheel. Is there a certain part number that I should be looking for?
