I have on '03 LT with ~33K miles and it's time to start looking for some new tires... Would like something that's good in the snow but also quiet on the road. Any suggestions?

Thanks. :undecided

I just put on a set of Toyo Open Country A/T. With the way that the tread looks they are suprisingly quiet.

Depends on what your primary use will be. If you spend most of the time on the highway/city with very minimal light offroading then try Michelin Cross Terrain SUV (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Cross+Terrain+SUV&partnum=47HR6CTSUV&vehicleSearch=true&fromCompare1=yes&place=6). Its a 75,000mile Highway All Season tire and came standard on some Envoys. I put 60,000 on a set before they really needed to be replaced. They are geat on the highway, not bad with 4x4 in average snow, and alright offroad. I drove them from Michigan to Vermont one year with some deep lake effect in New York, and Vermont had alot of snow. They could move you, but the auto 4x4 kicked in alot but it was an Exploder with no locking rear end. Wet traction was ok, the water has no where to go since the side tread is solid. They do get noiser and loose traction quickly after 40,000 but I really abused these tires.

If you want mostly highway with more offroad capability then look at the Bridgestone Dueler A/T REVO (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Bridgestone&tireModel=Dueler+A%2FT+Revo&vehicleSearch=true&partnum=47SR6ATREVOWL&fromCompare1=yes&place=10). Its a 50,000mile Off Road All-Terrain tire. Does good on traction and noise and pretty much all around from the reviews I have read.

I am stuck between these two for my next tires. At this point i'm not sure if I want to give up the couple of mpg for traction in any situation, as most of my miles are on highway, or if I want a good all around tire that does just ok during the couple of months of the year we get snow in Michigan.

This is what I roll with right now.Just took a 1500 mile jaunt and they were very quiet. These were freebees from the dealer so its all good.

I agree with Reid, get a set of Toyo Open Country A/Ts, they definately will not dissapoint you. I was about to get a set of Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revos, but they were backordered (Memorial Day weekend) and I really needed tires as my oe BFG Open Trails were really low. I think I spent about ~500 on a set with the sales going on, but the Revos were about 800 bucks. For the price difference on the same mileage tire (50k), I am glad I got the Open Country's. Reid got P255-70R16, but I stuck with the stock size of P245-70R16, but I doubt it really matters.
Dry traction is greatly improved, wet traction is good until you jump on the gas as they will break loose quicky, and havent tried them in snow yet as I went skiing for the first time with a friend and used his 04 Expedition.

Or you can also try these http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/findTireDetail.do?rcz=95035&rc=CSBINT&cs=255&pc=44519&rd=16&ar=70
I bought these back on april and believe me, they are quieter than my OEM ones, haven't try them on snow but will do it this season as we will take a trip to Tahoe. I really want to see how well they will handle in snow. I paid about $550 for a set and if I'm not mistaken they have 50,000 miles warranty.

When I got our Trailblazer the factories were shot, so I ordered a set of Hercules Terra Trac AW's for it. They are a little louder than stock, I know know that's not what you're looking for but they are a great tire. I got the set for under $400. Hercules also have a Terra Trac AT that looks like Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo, so they should be quieter. I think they are between $90-$100.

I plan on ordering a set of these in the next week or so:

Good reviews, and good survey numbers.

Have you guys compared prices online vs. in store? are prices good enough to make back the $100 shipping cost?

The shipping is going to be aorund $45 for UPS ground. I went around checking prices a few weeks ago, and the online prices are much better than local places. I called Sam's club and they said they will mount and balance them for ~$11 per tire.

I paid $503.00 for mine when I got them at Belle Tire. The price included mounting, balancing and a warranty.

Heres another question:
I have maybe 15000 miles on these BF Goodridge tires, lots of tread on them. What do I do with them? Do you think I can take them to one of those used tires places and get some money for them?

Possibly. You can try ebay too. You could do local pickup only if you don't want to hassle with the shipping. I think I am just going to throw mine out. They have around 25,000 on them.

I ordered the Kumho's last night. It came to $365 including shipping from Tirerack.

I know most people hate them, but I still have the stock BFG's with 50k on them so far and they look like they are good for about 5 to 10k more.. They still ride quiet and smooth.. I don't baby them either.. I guess I just got lucky!! I have had then rotated and balanced every 5 to 7 k though

I had about that many miles when I replaced mine. I probably could have gotten another 3-5k out of them, but I was leaving on a trip and was going to be some towing, so I wanted to make sure I wasnt going to have any problems. Mine were pretty quiet right up to about 49k (replaced at 50k), and then they started getting louder and louder. My Toyos are definately smoother and have better traction, but I was fairly happy with the stock tires.

Damn you guys with 16" wheels.

Tires like those Hercules ones don't even come in 17" sizes. And when I do find tires in my size, they're more money. I'd like to run 265's or 275's if they'll fit. :undecided

I'm looking at either buying snow tires and rims or just replacing the stock tires. Has anyone with new tires tried them in the snow yet?

Gaspar

In my case the front tyres are good for 5K top
But I found the spare brand new so I'll buy just one tyre and get the tyre out of the spare and put them in the rear, the reminder better tyre I'll use as spare :D

For me anything that can help me save $$ especially nowadays is a big thing.

I got the Kumho Road Venture A/T's put on a coupe of weeks ago

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Road+Venture+AT+825

So far they are head and shoulders above the stock Open Trail's. They ride nicer, are more responsive, better wet traction. I haven't gotten to try them out too much in the snow yet. But from the little bit I have driven in the snow with them they seemed to be much more capable then the Open Trail's. The only problem, and it is a very minor one, is that they a louder then the stock tires. I knew they were going to be when I bought them, and it really isn't a big issue for me.

I'm looking at three 245-65-17 tire types.

1-Bridgestone Dueller AT Revos
2-Toyo Open Country AT
3- Michelin Cross Terrain

Anyone have these types of tires and how do the handle in the snow?

Thanks

I have had no problems with the stock BFGs on my 03 Trailblazer, driving through about a foot of snow, over ice or up mountains. While the big trucks and all cars are stopping to put on their chains, I drive right pass them. The poor guys had to take off their chains 15 minutes later.

So far I'm real happy with the Fortera HLs on my Denali. They do seem quieter than the BFGs and seem to have more dry weather grip. I drove it in light snow with no problems (in 2WD). I really had no problems moving to use 4WD.

I love my Bridgestone H/L Alenza's. Went slightly wider than stock-got a 255 width. Had em 2 months....just had first snow in northern va....they worked great on the light snow. Cant wait for the real snow to hit.

I have been in 2 snow storms in the last week. 6 and 7 inches. The Toyo's are definitely better then the stock BFG's. I have a locking diff and only had to use A4wd a couple of times. The ride is a little stiffer but hey...its a truck.

I love my Toyo Open Country's, have driven in snow a few times, and will be going skiing again tomorrow. Definately smoother, better traction, and treadwear than the stock BFG.

Im with Dave though, they were great until 50K when they became really loud and I could break them loose on anything. <-- Its a good thing to some people, but before about 48K I could never do this, so the tires were balding.

Also, I put on stock size P245-70/R16 so I didnt have to get new chains.

I'm kind of an "outsider" I guess having an Isuzu Ascender (2005 4.2 4x4 5pass) So I hope I can post here.

I want the revo's as I had them on my last suv and were great... but they don't come in the stock 245/65-17 size... They are available in 255/65-17 but I don't want to mess up my ABS or A4wd system???

Those of you that have the Toyo Open Country tires in stock size how much did it effect MPG? My local Goodyear dealer is willing to take my crappy Conti's with only 4k miles and give me a good deal on the GoodYear Silent Armor Wrangulars -- which look great but I fear gas useage will increase and I drive about 600 miles a week. And here in New England we get everything rain/slush/ice/snow

http://www.goodyearwrangler.com/goodyearwrangler/html/index.jsp

Just curious what you folks have done and if MPG went south?

thanks and this looks like a great place.....

I know there are some who have gone up to the 265/xx/17 size. I'm unsure on the aspect ratio for that wheel.

I was not able to find enough info on that tire, as they are relatively new, but pretty high priced.

I am currently in need of replacement at 38k on the Continentals. Really looking at the Firestone Destination LE's or the Bridgestone Dueler Alenza.

Thanks for the info -- Yeah they are pricey but my local goodyear shop is giving me a good deal at $160 per tire PLUS a 85 (and an 80 rebate on the set) credit per tire for my factory Continentals which are not bad tires but I can't say they are good either :-) I'm just afraid that MPG will decrease as the other person here just pointed out with his Toyo's :-(

Both of my sons work for a local off-road shop. They get to install tires of every make and model, and size...

They prefer the Pro-Comp AT's for all around driving. They are priced right, work perfect in all conditions, run smooth and quiet, and last very well (some Super Duty owners are seeing over 50K on them!).

I'd suggest checking them out.

I've also had great luck with Kuhmo tires. I ran a set of their MT's in 31 x 11.50 on my Ranger and Explorer and they stick like glue in the snow. They are a true off-road tire, though, and you get to live with some extra road noise.

Currently I'm running the 265 x 16 Bridgestone Duelers on the TB, and I don't care for them as much as other tires I've ran in the past. They are hard, and don't stick as good in the snow as Dunlop AT's or the Pro Comp AT's. My next tires will be the Pro Comps.

I have 265/70/17 Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors, and I'm the happiest I've ever been about a set of tires in 35 years of buying tires. Quiet on road - sticky off road. But I'm a rock and sand kind of guy, not a fan of mud.

Mileage went down 1-2 MPG, even adjusting for the miscalibrated odometer (These are almost 2" bigger diameter than stock).

But, it may be driving habits and my commute route. I'm also guessing that lifting it also affected the under-vehicle airflow, which may have been designed to help get better mileage. I've got over 10" ground clearance now under the frame.

Have not been in snow yet, but haven't had any issues with hydroplaning in water. The Wranglers have 8 out of 10 on the Goodyear chart for snow and water traction, if I remember correctly.

Yep, same here. Mileage is in the tube now, if I drive hard like usual, I only get about 200-220 miles on a tank (about 14.5-15.5gal before light goes on).
