My 2003 EXT/5.3l has 60K miles and a slight idle miss,
so I thought I'd check all the plug wires and change
the OEM platinums (.060 gap) for new iridiums (.040 gap)
while I was that far in.

I managed to get the four left hand side (LHS) plugs
changed and wires checked, but the RHS plugs seem
to be next to impossible to get to.

Has anyone changed the plugs on a 5.3l/EXT and have
any tips? I think I can get to the middle 2 through the
wheel well, but the rear is up against a firewall hose,
and the front is right in light with the frame.

It almost looks like you have to pop off the heater hose
quick connects, but I don't want to get too far off track
since it's a daily driver.

TIA
mike

Someboby has to have some insight to this. I was able to change 5 of 8 of these plugs. I was only able to get one on the RHS and I had to undo the heater hose QC's to get that one. I couldn't even get the boots off the others. This is crazy. Do I need to rent an engine hoist?

Oh, BTW, my first post so - Hi, I'm Mike.

Mobil1 Oil - $32 Cdn
Fram Filter - $6
Champion Plat. Plugs - $52

Truck has 110,000Km on and decided to change plugs. FPITA!!!!

Tips:

Driver side - Easiest
Recommended additional tools - short & long extentions, universals, boot puller
Pull off wheel - you need access from side for 1 or 2 plugs (do not forget this step, you are warned!!!)

Passenger side - @#$~? hard
Remove Wheel ( same warning as above)
Middle two are easiest
One by firewall, access from wheel well, tight but do-able)
Front one is worst- right by wheel strut
I removed air filter, washer fluid & clip for A/C lines on engine block
Access from top, barely any room to move.

Time for OLF and plugs....4Hrs!!!!

Additional unforseen expenses;
Set of wires (OEM(Dealer) - $350 Cdn!!!!, After market A/C Delco $220) Tore 2 wires trying to pull off the boot!
Box of Bandaids - $3
Extra case of beer - $24

Job well done......never again!!!
