View Full Version : Disabling Traction Control and StabiliTrak for burnouts and dyno

Just FYI... If you want to do burnouts :p or, as in my case, when I took my SS to the dyno, obviously we had to disable traction control.
That wasn't to hard, there is a small little hidden button that you probably didn't notice on the left (driver's side) of shift lever itself. Press this button once to disable traction control.
Weird thing was the StabiliTrak kept coming on and preventing us from using the dyno. :duh: Looked in the manual and found that pressing this button once disables traction control, pressing and HOLDING IT DOWN for a couple seconds will disable StabiliTrak.
Of course this is temporary, as it will come back on when you start the vehicle again or toggle it on/off using the small button on your shift lever.
Also the drivers information console on the gauge cluster gives a clear indicator warning when it's off, so you'll know.
There you go! Easy.
Time for some smokey burnouts!!!!

No, it works on the AWD as well, I've actually been able to spin them ever so slightly off the line ;)

hmm i wish I could retrofit my car with one of those. the huge TC button on the dash is a waste of space, I'd rather have one of those cool gauges like ourzoo has in that spot

on non ss's there is a torx screw in that spot where that button is that holds the shifter in place. Can you locate that torx screw somewhere? I want one of those shifters! do they come in all black? is this new for all 2006's with TC?

Jimmy, thats true only for the old all black shifter you and I have. The new ones with the silver/black/wood inserts have the torx screw on the front facing the front of the TB. There isnt anything where that button is on the regular shifter, so a retrofit might be possible. I think all it is a 2 or 3 wires that you could easily change over to work with the new shifter. I wouldnt do it myself because I have 4WD, but for you that isnt a problem.
For more info on where the torx screw is on the newer handles with the inserts, check the articles section, there is an install guide.:m2:

This may seem like a dumb question.. but I gotta ask since this is the first vehicle I've owned with StabiliTrack and Traction Control.
I assume for drag racing situations (which I'll be in this Thursday), traction control and stabilitrack should be left ON to provide the best launch. Is this correct? If not, what's the best combination for on the track performance?

I would say no to Traction Control. It will cut your power if you start to break loose and that is never good. Stabilitrak wont be a factor since your just going in a straight line so leave it on (in case you're heading for the wall).

Damn, I didnt have a camera. I did some awesome doughnuts in my parking lot at work after the Lakers game on Friday night, it was schweet! With just traction control off it's like butter! My rear tires are already visibly worn at the edges of the tread though, I need to take it easy...

Another good reason for the AWD. Tires last longer!:D

IMO, the thing that makes traction control pretty useless is the amount of time that it cuts power for (3-4 seconds) is wayyy too long. It would be nice if it gradually cranked back the throttle until the wheels hooked up but it doesn't, it just cuts the gas all together, making manuvering really awkward.

You can almost get away with using the Active Handling on a vette for launching, but even it can slow you down. With the T/C we have on the TBSS and GTO it is very slow to disengage, thus killing any time gains by not spinning.
I forgot to turn it off on the goat one time and lost almost 7/10's from my previous run. I usually remember when I'm in the burnout box and can't figure out why my wheels aren't spinning:duh:

Good luck with the doughnuts though!
I couldn't justify the cost, weight and slowness of AWD for the 2-3 times I'll probably get up to the snow this year. Trust me there is no traction issue for 2wd on launches.

I know you'll find this shocking, but no one at the dealership where I bought mine knew you could disable the traction control and Stabilitrak.
Shocking, huh?

Me neither, I could tell the saleman more about the TB than he could me. Not surprised in one bit, as I have and am doing a lot of research on TBs.

Too bad you just cant buy a TB Direct from Chevy online. Then we wouldn't have to teach all them Salespeople about the Chevy's they are trying to sell us!:rotfl:

Not that you'll be able to do burnouts on dry pavement, but you do have the button. I couldn't believe it either, but it's there.

speak for yourself!:rotfl:
and on the dyno with the Stabilitrak off, above 40MPH it flashes "Stabilitrak active" and the traction control light blinks?? it didn't affect the outcome, but it was weird to see that happening when I am trying to concentrate on the tach, I was like, "OH SH*T, I'M BREAKING SOMETHING!!" but that wasn't the case (Thankfully:o )

That button actually has a function for the 2WD guys, but the only way you're going to be able to do a burnout in an AWD is to add another button that says 'Supercharger' or 'Nitrous'.

This feature is the first thing I looked for and found when I test drove. Now if Diablo or SCT can just find a way to reverse the function of that little button :D
