Hey all,
32k miles
I just started hearing a problem (besdies my piston slap that is getting louder by the day) that my friendly dealer Braeger Chevrolet could not.
When accerlating from a complete stop at the first shift point there is a fluttering or rapid ticking sound that is made briefly and then it goes away until the second shift. After that it usually is not heard anymore until you accel from a complete stop again,
Is this the Fan Clutch that I have been reading about.

What you are describing, at first, does not sound like the classic fan clutch problem. Usually when that happens, you hear a loud fan roar throughout the entire RPM range and it does not go away with shifts.
Now if someone knows more about any new symptom, I will yield to them.
Does it go away as it shifts or just after the shift?

The noise occurs/goes away as it is shifting

what about this...
as its making the noise- carefully shift into neutral....
(since youre accelerating- you dont want to pop it into neutral as the revvs will climb up).. instead accelerate- hear noise- let off gas- and into neutral

Thanks for the advice.. that wont work... The sound starts as it is shifting... and stops when the shift is complete. I would have to be on it like white on rice

Sounds just like a piston rod bearing. As the trans shifts, a lot of pressure is relieved off the bearing and the rod will "SLAP" the bearing with no load on it. When load is returned, the centrifical force will keep the rod pressured on teh bearing surface and not make any noise.
First off, see if you are low on oil.
Second, while in PARK, rev the motor up and let off and get on it real gently a couple of times. Listen when you change from rpm's up to down. If it makes noise at these times, piston rod bearing or piston slap.
Third, try changing the oil to a thicker oil for a few hunderd miles and see if the noise goes away. If it does, engine trouble.

Now that I think about it, you are under warranty, right? With 32K miles on it, I would be getting this into the dealer ASAP for some sort of diagnosis. Thinking about what blueblazer5_3 mentioned, if it is something that is a pending failure, you want them to at least be aware of it before it goes out of warranty.
At the same time, I thought they did some rolling changes with the 5.3's that helped correct the piston slap issue? (not to hijack the thread, but was kinda wondering...)

Thursday night after work.. my lovely friend had some problems and needed to go to the dealer on Friday Morning.... And as of today I am being told that Crankshaft Bearings are the problem....
The dealer is putting this on me... :hissy:because I ran the engine without oil...
some background. The engine ran out of oil between oil changes (3-4k miles) according to the dealer.
So now I get to fight it out with GM and we all know how much fun that is.

:woot:New Crank and Bearings are being ordered and installed by GM

I have been asking the dealer that too.. because everytime I checked it,, no probs.... it is going thru oil now.. and I have not noticed any spots in the garage or cloudy exhuast... so it is going somewhere.... :duh:

i think the noise is normal becuase of transfare case ,, is your car 4X4 or 2X4
and if you have another car 4X4 not all wheel drive i mean all time no but one with transfare case you should hear this sound, try to engage the 4X4 hi and start from complete stop i think the sound will reduse alot
this all i know by the go to the dealer and ask them to lubricate the shafts
good luck by
