View Full Version : Front brake auxillary cooling package?

On the Edmunds review, under one of the pictures in the pic viewer is says that the front ducts (where the tow hooks on regular 4X4 TBs would go) that are outlined in silver can be fitted with a dealer-installed front brake cooling package. Does anyone have one of these? If so, can you tell a difference before and after the install?

Yea, that review was the first I'd heard of the Front Aux Cooling Ducts too.....which means if I went and asked my dealer about it, they wouldn't have a clue what I'd be talking about.
I am sure that the ducts would only be noticable under repeated hard-braking situations when fade starts to become apparent. And unfortunately I think most of us (save 1 or 2) still have minimal mileage (under 1k) on our SSs, and thus have yet to even start to run the truck hard.
'Course, even though I am sure I will never need said Ducts, I know sooner or later I will end up installing them on my truck....if anything just for a conversation piece. (Dude, my truck is sooo fast sitting still, and it can stop on a dime, too.) ;)

Thanks for the replys guys, I just saw that and though it might help braking when trailering long distances with frequent stops. If I get an SS, I will get the package too, but is it only a dealer install, or can you just buy the parts and install them yourself?

You can buy the kit over the counter and install yourself

Cool. Actually I like the site, it's like I'm looking at the actual order screen that the dealership would have. Just one question though, if I order a body part, does it come painted or is that on me? I'm needing a new front bumper cover but wasn't sure if it was like my bikes plastics and come painted. Probably shouldn't ask here but oh well.

Please post a pic when you receive one. Thanks. I'm sure a lot of that kit price is due to it being a very low volume item.

Ouch, for that kind of cash, I was kinda hoping for something more than just some abs-plastic ducts and brackets.... (not sure what, but oh well)

Supply and demand. It's not going to be a high demand option for a limited (or low) production truck. It's expensive due to low volume.
If you are even the least bit handy, buy some flex tubing and play around with making your own kit.

Well the kit doesn't look like much...mounting hardware, molded ducts and backing plates (price obviously comes from limited demand/ low volume). I don't plan on needing them, but I got a great deal on them to "test" so I'll be interested to see how they fit etc.

That's cool. I'd like to make the 2-3 hour drive to the complex near Chicago next summer. Apparently there is a dragstrip and road course. I could use the TBSS to trailer our motorcycles down there and run everything! My only concern is a buddy of mine warned me about running laps in my $40k truck and getting swiped by some kid in his '84 Mustang. Ouch.

I've seen this pic, but I wanted to see what kind of flexible ducting they use to channel the air to the brakes since the bracket which attaches to the spindle in this picture does not look like a standard adapter which comes with most kits I have installed. This is simply a pic of the ducts that attach to the front bumper, but that's all.
I really wana see the whole thing  :rotfl:

I was quoted $379 as well from Dal Salbaugh. I'm waiting for a response about pricing on group purchase to see if there is more of a discount available.

The GM Performance parts kit includes 5 major parts:
- 2 ducts that attach to the front fascia and stop about an inch past
the wheel house liner and direct air towards the rotor.
- 2 rotor shields that are significantly smaller than the units on the truck
(should allow the air to get to the rotor)
- Bag of fasteners and instructions.
The kit does not have flexible tubing to direct area directly to the rotor/caliper, but in my experience that would not be necessary unless you were actually racing for extended periods (which is not possible since the truck is not legal in any racing class).
The GM kit appears to offer all the additional cooling required for open track days and the like. Along with the SS specific front rotors and pads (same material as the Z51 C6 Vettes) already provide from the factory this should work well.
Post when anyone is going to the track, I and others would like to attend also.
Good Luck

From the pics they don't seem to have a hose that actually makes them useful. :undecided
